German guy goes Swedish (SHEEESH)
Its true. I bought a Volvo today.I'd be thrown out of my localVW club if they knew. But I couldn't resist. What would you do.?? Today,no lie. For the last 20 yrs, Ive installed engines for a living. Not much(read:zero)experience with Volvo.I ve owned Vws most of my life. Some Porsches and a few Mercedes(LOVE THEM). Anywho,I go to see a buddy of mine at a shop in Norfolk Va.Theres a beautiful 1996 960 out front. I dont exactly fall to the ground over Volvos but this one caught my eye. The shop owner told me he just got the title, and naturally, I asked"whats wrong with it?" " Broke the belt, needs an engine." SO today,as I live and breathe,I purchase a white 96 960 with a light tan(buckskin??)leather interior, with a set of Bridgestone Potenza 205 55 16 tires that have less than 15% wear,no rust(from Palm Beach Florida)loaded with options for 400 bucks. What would you have done??Me too.I couldnt get the money out fast enough. I looked around and i have my choise of engines locally for between 500 and 800.I deal with alot of sdalvage yards around here soI feel confident I can get a good replacement. Thats what I did today.I hope I wasn t the only one who hit a home run. aside from that, its a terrific web site and I ve learned much doing some searches. Good luck and troublefree mile to all. coming together nicely
I bought the 960 on Monday.Wednesday I popped the hood and started disassembly(my favorite part). No broken exhaust studs,no broken elctrical plugs,Just a smooth teardown.Getting the valve cover off was a little tricky, but I merely spun the crank back and forth a few times and the cover came free.heres the best part. I had decided to just pull the engine and replace it with a known good part.(KGP)Around 800 beans for a decent low mike engine.Too much,\. After pulling the head and seeing 24 bent valves,I decided that it only needed new valves and it would be as good as new.I called around for the price of a good head and around here(portsmouth va)it varies from 250 to 500 simoleans. Not too high ,but I'm on a budget. So I call a salvage yard that I do alot of business with and ask"Joe,help a brother out.I need 24 valves from a 96 volvo 960." Joe ,the wonderful guy he is,says"If you pull it,I'll let you have it for a hundred bucks".So tomorrow morning I'll be puling thhe head of a real nice 96 960.I checked it out today. The oil is full and appearas to be synthetic. The odometer reads 222,XXX so I'll more than likely be dropping it off at the machine shop to get the full treatment, resurface, check for leaks, cut the seats and valves and reassembly with new valve seals. My wife will be be as happy as can be.I'll keepm all posted. I might hate Volvos, but I do love this 960.Peace and carefree motoring to all who read this.
