Default Hello from sunny South Africa!

(It seems like my actual first post went missing, so I am retyping what I remember )

My name is Réhann Coetzee and I live in South Africa. To be more specific, in the town of Nelspruit, in the province of Mpumalanga - riding and driving heaven.

I don't own a Volvo yet, but I am looking at an XC70 at a dealership about 200km from here. I was hoping to have it for the weekend, but a through mechanical check showed oil in the cooland, traced to a leaking oil cooler. So this will have to be fixed first.

My dad had a B444 in the 1960s before he met my mother, so the brand has always interested me. I still fantasize about an 850 R wagon...

I am looking forward to learning from you, the enthusiasts who actually drive (and preserve) these cars!

Thank you! I should have the car by Friday, the dealer noticed that the oil cooler has a leak and that is being fixed now

I will update this post with my impressions.

Uhm… I realise I never posted an update. The xc70 I looked at was a mess, so I bought a Mitsubishi Pajero and I have been very happy with it.

But just over a week ago I picked up a 2005 V50 T5 with just under 145 000km on the clock, one owner, FSH. I wasn’t planning on buying a Volvo, but it has been nothing but pure joy.

I will be asking advice on a replacement head unit with rear-view camera etc.

In the meantime, I am truly enjoying this Swede!

Wishing everyone a brilliant 2025

Yes looks nice
We also have a S40T5 I purchased it in 2005 with around 5000k on so almost new
Problems
Replaced the PCV 3 times now the last time we only changed the damaged rubber diaphragm , which I got from Poland for R50 and cleaned the unit
Replaced the front dampers with Koni sport (The originals were leaking) at around 70k
Changed the fuel pressure sensor at around 80k
Changed most of the coolant hoses at around 120k
recently had to change the ABS unit , cost from Volvo was more than the value of the car , so we got a used one and changed the damaged parts worked was R1500,
Besides the mormal service items , filters, oil , CV boot , one ball joint , that is all mechanical
Body is fine no rust as its been in Gauteng I give it a polish once a year
Interior
Had to redo the head lining cant remember when
The seats a combination of vynil/leather , have seen many in bad condition but ours are like new after 20 years
Well its on 133k so quite low but thats probably like yours
The S40 2nd gen is probably not the finest from Volvo as its really a Ford Focus
For the people living outside RSA the scary thing is I never had to do a MOT , or roadworthy certificate for 20 years , one just renews the licence and its fine for the road , crazy , the only time one has to do that is when there is change of owner

I forgot to say mine’s headliner is also in dire need of a makeover. How did you fix yours?

Mine breezed through the roadworthy (as we call our MOT).
