So just bought a 1989 volvo 240 DL I have to heat it up before driven it was especially cold this morning so was warming it up took keys out of ignition to open trunk and put key right back in to finish warming and knowthing omg no spark knothing key turned lock brack down in drive no spark even when turning key please help
do the dash lights come on when you turn the key to position ? when you turn the key to start, does the engine turn over? when you say you have no spark, did you test something?
A few things can be in play - If the shifter is not in park (or the shifter's position sensor is wonky), the car won't crank. Before you try to start the next type, try rowing the shifter from park to lo to park 10-12 times fast to see if that helps (cleans the contacts in the position sensor). Next try wiggling the key when you try to start - sometimes the ignition switch can act up and this may help.
Did you check fuses?
What does your battery voltage look like? If the car is new to you, consider cleaning and tightening the battery posts and inspect the cables for corrosion.
Your car shouldn't need to warm up to drive - unless you are waiting for the defroster or heat to come on. Any cold start issues - stumbling when cold etc? If you started the car, then shut down and and it cranks but won't restart, I'd be more suspicious of a fuel delivery issue - coolant temp sensor, fuel pressure, intake air leak etc (things that lean out the mixture).
