Welcome to the Forum.

Is the car in park all the way? If not, it will not give up the key. If it is, try putting it in neutral to see if the key will come out.

Also, is the battery completely died?

While it's in park, make sure that the shift lock comes all the way back out. in my '00 it sticks so you need to push on the bottom of it a bit to get the top to kick out. then mine gives up the key.

Try stepping on the brake and wiggling the shifter while in park. Now try moving the key. It may be the shift solenoid inside the shifter that has gone bad.
