hi guy's had a low beam failure indicator come up on the dash, so i purchased a new bulb and fitted it is there something i need to be doing or havn't done to clear the message also the buld dosn't work either when i checked the old 1 it dosn't look like it's blown either so is this a common fault on s40's.

which year S40? The low beams have a relay within the CEM. On the Gen 1s, they were prone to failure either by burning out or due to cracks in the solder joints on the circuit board. So if a new buld doesn't light, next step is to check fuses, then check voltage and ground at the connector and inspect for cracks. If you are getting no voltage there, then you can either check voltage at the CEM or assume its the CEM and replace. On the Gen 1 S40s the CEM is not paired to the ECU so you can simply swap in replacement.
