New Member 1998 V90
1998 Volvo V90.
My brother had a Volvo 244 sedan back in 1977 that he would let me use frequently. I was hooked. A friend in the 90's had a 740 that I helped him work on since he couldn't afford the dealership. Still hooked at this point. These vehicles are overbuilt. Life events seemed to keep from getting one. I have been looking for a good solid one for some time. Wanted a 244, but definitely wanted to stick to one of the rear drive models. I just found the one.
My 1st Volvo. I just bought it yesterday, 18 Nov 2021. A 1998 (01/98 build date) Volvo V90 wagon, 109,886 original miles, no body damage, garage kept in same family since new. Have most service records and may be able to get original sticker. Seller is looking for it. My intent is to restore interior as close to original as possible and find replacements for the few missing or broken parts. Runs great, paint in excellent condition, headlamps are not even cloudy, absolutely no rust. The interior needs a lot of TLC as original carpets and leather are dried out and I'm not sure I can salvage them. The leather maybe, carpets, no way.
Need to replace brake rotors and pads. Seller had pads but could not find a shop to replace them. Rear driver side is metal on metal. Top priority at this point.
I had Firestone put it on a lift and do an inspection. They let me under the vehicle and pointed out their recommendations. Everyone in the shop came to take a look and look for issues. Everything looks great except the following. Nothing but surface rust on undercarriage. All told, they only came up an estimate of $1,020 for things they could do. Included $234 for A/C check($54) and $184 for evacuate and recharge. Turned to be a bad relay.
Everything works except the following:
Brakes - Need to replace brake rotors and pads. Seller had pads but could not find a shop to replace them. Rear driver side is metal on metal. Top priority at this point.
Sway bar links are worn out. R&R.
Shifter control rod bushing. Auto transmission. High priority, very worn.
Front driveshaft u-joint.
Driveshaft center support bushing.
Transmission gasket leaking. R&R
Coolant flush and fill with new coolant and thermostat.
Sunroof. The motor stopped working on it and they sealed it with silicone. Low priority. I may try to fix it once everything else is done.
Driver seat motor works intermittently. No rhyme or reason. Low priority. It is set where I want it.
Right side fog lamp along with reattaching front air dam that was the victim of a parking curb. Right side backup light lens.
Small dent on right side rear door. Am checking with a paint-less dent repair shop this afternoon to see if they can fix it. Need to reattach passenger right side rear side molding. It is in car..
Drivers headlight wiper blade and possibly motor. Need to verify the right side works as well.
Horn seems very weak. I will pull and try to clean. See if that helps. If not will replace and retain the originals.
Need 2 new key fobs and 1 more key. Key fob works but the unlock button cap is missing. I have to use something to depress the unlock portion as my big fingers cant get in there.
Sorry if I rambled on. Just excited to own a new toy. It's been a while since I had one and this will probably be my last. My wife wants to add a covered front porch to our house and we have been getting bids. Now I have to back to the architect and see they can add an extension for a garage since the original garage was converted to a master suite. Wish me luck.
