Default New? Old? Don't know...

Hello... I joined on here back in 2008 when I was shopping for a Volvo. Unfortunately that fell through and I ended up with a horrendously unreliable Cadillac Catera. Well... that is about to end.

Just bought a 1990 740 GLE tonight. Only paid $700 for it. They listed the car as not being able to shift in reverse, but I quickly determined that the problem is most likely a misadjusted shift linkage.

I am assuming that the transmission mount is bad and "Park" is Neutral and when the car is revved the linkage is moved and throws the car in the drive and stalls it out. Even the shifter in general is funny, it doesn't go down into the lowest gears on the selector. Car drives just fine when it's in drive with no slipping or soft shifts.

Oh... and the best part? This car was bought in Sweden by "Evert Jernberg" at the Volvo Tourist and Diplomat Sales Center in Goteborg, and brought here to the US. It even has Service records for 1200 and 6000 miles in Sweden.

Welcome to VF. You have a rare car there and it sounds like a real awesome one. As for the transmission issue, I bet just changing the mount(s) will fix the issue.

Thanks for the welcome!

I actually just ordered from you guys yesterday... I determined that it was the shifter linkage bushings. Two of them are gone and one is half missing.

WOW, that would definitely cause the issue you are having. Nice easy fix though so you got yourself a good deal.

How did you make out with the bushings? Also, did everything come ok with your order?
