Default New Volvo Owner

Aloha everybody. My name is Oliver, I have never owned a Volvo, and have always had respect for them. I bought a 1999 Volvo S80 T6 with leather and sunroof for $3,000. I didn't want anything too nice here in Hawaii, cause I want to jump in it after the beach, get sand in it, etc. It has 87k miles, and seemed like a steal that would certainly log another 30k miles without problems. Seemed the perfect island car. 87k is sorta normal for a '99 in the Aloha State. I'm on the island of O'ahu, it's like 30x40 miles.

Seems like the Volvo was a mistake. I should not have bought this model. It will probably sour me on Volvo. After a week of ownership, I noticed the top engine mount needs replacing, and either one of the turbos are leaking, or there is a hose somewhere that sprung a leak. Luckily, I have a little Saturn beater as backup, and extra street parking for the Volvo oil spill (sorry neighbors, I'll get kitty litter). It seems there are alot of angry S80 T6 owners on the web, too, and plenty of recalls.

I've had plenty of shadytree experience, and looks like I'll get fully broken in on Volvo S80s if I keep the car. I like the car. I want to keep it and drive it. But, does anybody here think it's a good idea? Worth my time? I was thinking I'd drive it 15k miles over the next year, get deployed for a year and keep it in storage, then come back and put another 15k miles on it over a year and sell it. I paid $3,000 for it. I don't want to pay another $3,000 in repairs. So, I'm looking at getting it up to about 120k miles at the most, then trying to sell it for $2,000. I was thinking, surely a Volvo, with their great reputation, would last another 33k miles or so without any major hiccups. Faulty logic.

Mahalo,
Oliver

Welcome to the forum. Fix and drive it for another 130,000. They will last forever, but they're not the cheapest cars to own.

A 1999 s80 t6, get rid of it. $3000, something wrong here. These were the worst years for this car. Everytime i see one we know it may need a trans. or something expensive if not taken care of.

We see people all the time who think they are getting a good deal on a Volvo and end up with this car, that has come from the auction most likely, what a bad decision for them. You might have some luck though. I guess just drive it...

Thanks guys, guess I got what I should have been expecting, mixed reviews . I like the car, and I'm willing to burn another $1,000 on it and some elbow grease. I don't mind working on things... so I might get my money's worth out of the car. It sure did clean up nice... yes, from an auction. Was a bank repo... probably the worst possible S80 . Maybe the worst decision I've ever made... but, hey, I probably would have just lost the $3,000 on the stock market or something gay... anything I buy here over $10,000 is going to lose $3,000 after a few years anyways... so, in Hawaii it still makes sense to own something like this b/c I won't put many miles on it, and I won't ever be more than 40 miles from home, but tow trucks are hella pricey.
