Default New to Volvos

Hello, I am Jon and my wife and I are looking into getting a Volvo. We have noticed that they are good on gass mailage and with the price of gas that is a plus. The problem I have is I don't know much about them. My grandfather had a couple of deisel ones whan I was a kid, but that is about it. My main concern is like American cars I start thinking about getting rid of the vehicle at around 100,000 miles. With a Toyota this would not even be a thought. But how is the durability of Volvo's?

Hello Jon,

Greetings from Narita, Japan.

Welcome to the forum, I hope you can find useful information here.

As to durability of Volvos, it really depends on how people take care. I used to drive an 850, and 850s are noted to go for over 200,000 or 300,000 miles (Approx. 320,000 to 480,000kms). As long as you follow the scheduled maintenance and give it a regular fluid changes, Volvos are noted to go as long as Japanese makes. Actually, many American cars also go for a long time & many miles (except for body rusting), but since many people don't follow scheduled maintenance, cars fall apart prematurely.

Anyway, I wish you & your wife find a nice Volvo. Be sure to check the condition & replacement record on the timing belt.

Good day!

Default RE: New to Volvos

see my volvo for life posting in the new members area. My wife has over 210k mi. on her 93 850 which we have owned since 160k. I have only had to do regular maintinence on the vehicle, and it has been a great running vehicle for us. I used to drive nissans but volvos have won me over; safer, better ride, and run forever and the turbos are fast! It's unfortunate but i do agree with the american car statement... after 100k they are done. my last american car was a '98 bonneville that died at 95k......
