Exclamation Newbie with an '09 XC70

Hello! I purchased a '09 XC70 3.2 14 days ago with 52,000 miles and a 2000 mile dealer warranty. Nice car- so excited! Three days later it died as I was driving home and while it said that I had 100 miles to empty, the tank was bone dry. The Ford dealership, where I bought it, "called down the road to the Volvo dealership" and discovered that the "gas tank sensor" was bad. I was told this was a known problem and that Volvo was fixing these for free. It was fixed and I got the car back 5 days later. I then drove it for 3 more days, filled up the tank on Friday and had the same exact thing happen as I was driving down I95 last night- with "120 to empty". Since the service dept. is closed today, the dealership is giving me a loaner and looking at the car again since I am still under warranty.
My questions are these: Should I DEMAND a Volvo mechanic to look at it? Ford owns Volvo so I would think that shouldn't be an unreasonable request.
Do I also ask for another 2000 mile warranty from the dealership?
Any advise would be helpful- my husband wants to give the car back but I love it. I wrecked my S60 and have been waiting patiently for a new Volvo...

Thanks and this website is so interesting to read and learn from! Thanks!

Melanie

first off, ford no longer owns volvo so im pretty sure they would not send it to the volvo dealership.
you can try to send it to the volvo dealer and see if they will goodwill the sending unit again but it might not happen because you did not buy the vehcile at a volvo dealer and who knows where the vehicle was service before because unless the original owner bought the safe and secure warranty, volvo warranty is 4 years 50,000 miles so it would fall outside of warranty.

Dang it! Thanks for the response. Does the whole fuel system need to be replaced? I forgot to mention the towing guy said he smelled oil. No clue why as it had an oil change when they got the car in September. I am also clueless on vehicles.

no the its just the fuel level sensor has to be looked at. i would take it to to the volvo dealership if i were you. it migt not be covered and a bit expensive but those are the people that will know how to fix it properly not the people at a ford dealer.
the brake vacuum pump leaks oil a lot on those engines.

Quick update- Volvo put in a new gas tank. Evidently the tank has two parts and the one side was filling up but the other side wasn't. ??? I pick it up today. Any questions I should ask?
