Good Morning all,
Thank you for letting me join, I have a bit of a dilemma that I am hoping for some help. I purchased a 1994 940 Turbo Wagon from an estate, needs a bit of work, nothing too major, or so I thought. I have been through all the VIN decoders, VIC decoders and I cannot find this car...
From what I have seen, and what I read, is Volvo didn't make a US market 940 Turbo Wagon with a manual transmission. Well I have one.
Is there someplace I can find information on parts??? SPecifically transmission? I am thinking I will be needing a clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/etc. and I can't find a parts list with my VIN.
And what gearbox do you have - m46,m47, or m90? m46 has a red cast iron case with a laycock electric overdrive for 5 th speed, m47 has an aluminum case and manual overdrive (with a 5th gear shift lever position versus a button on the top) and the m90 is pure 5 speed also with an aluminum case. I've never seen one in a car in the US but was used with 94-98 940 and 960s.
That car comes up as a north amercian 94 940 when the VIN in typed into the parts catalog. Does not specify then trans but the choices are aw71 and m90. What info do you need? No manual transmission parts are shown in the catalog - only automatics. Is it possible someone retrofitted a manual? And if so is it a m47 or a m90? (I've converted several Automatic Volvos to manual over the years, usually the hardest part is the clutch pedal)
Thanks for the info, two questions:
How can I tell what the tranny is? (Sorry, first Volvo for me, VW guy...)
Second, is there any tell tale signs as to a retrofit?
I tried manually decoding the VIN and I get hung up on the number 8 in the 9th VIN # location, which denotes transmission, it shows up as an All Wheel Drive model, which again, it isn't. So weird.
Volvos parts catalog does not show a M47 being in a 94 940. Clutches for red block cars with a m45/46 had a flat flywheel (i used to keep resurfaced 6 and 8 bolt flat flywheels in stock to be able to get clutch jobs out in a few hours, not having to wait to get the flywheel surfaced) or usually the m47 had a stepped flywheel that I would have to get surfaced for each car.
You think you need a clutch? I would replace them when they started slipping due to a worn clutch plate. What info do you need, since it appears you have a frankencar? 271267 is the part number for a stepped flywheel clutch kit. Different number for a flat flywheel.
