Unable to turn Volvo Ignition key in 1999 S70
As done for past 22 years, inserted the ignition key. Mechanically could not turn the key in the ignition. Never happened before.
Removed and tried a second ignition key. Again, could not turn this second key in the ignition.
Reinserted the first ignition key. Again, could not turn this key in the ignition.
NOW, cannot remove that first key from the ignition.
Looking for ideas about what may have happened, and what solution may be.

Order a new ignition column lock from Volvo using the VIN number. The key tumbler will be manufactured to fit your existing key. Special order takes a few days. Your existing chip keys will still work.
If you replace the column lock with a used or new one that uses a different key - you will have to have a software download using a VIDA subscription to make those keys work.
Others have gotten their column locks to work with hammers, prying the bottom steel plate, and various other methods.
It's possible the cable from the shifter to the ignition lock has a problem - normally the key cannot be removed if the shifter is not / or thinks it's not in park. But a cable problem does not prevent the key from being able to be turned.

Thank you for this reply.

Will check if car "thinks" gear is or is not in "Park". Don't think the car is in "Park" since I can turn the wheel.
When using "shift lock override", can shift gear lever from what appears to be "Park" to any other gear and then back to what appears to be "Park".
Not looking to apply force.
Will check cable from shifter to the ignition lock as well.

If the shift release button (that you squeeze to move out of park) does not pop all the way back out - the key won’t come out. It sounds like the key turns enough to unlock the steering column but not enough to start the car. If so what’s happening is the normal way steering column locks fail - you can turn the key but not enough to start the car. You can start the car by removing the electrical portion of the ignition switch from the left end of the column lock and using a screwdriver to turn and start the car - as long as the steering column is unlocked!

Shift release button DOES pop all the way back out.
Key does not come out.
After inserting the key, could not turn the key at all. Yet the steering column DOES appear to be unlocked.
Initially, could not move the shift lever that is near top of shift. When I depressed the "shift lock override" button that is near the base of the shift lever, that is when I could move the shift lever.
Will try to find how to remove the electrical portion of the ignition switch as you suggest. Any further guidance on this "how to" would be appreciated, of course.
Thank you and best regards

Robert's DIY looks straightforward.
Have the tools indicated in this video.
Will try sometime this week.
Again, than you for your guidance. Much appreciated.
