Volvo ECM Part 3819875

I am told that changing out this ECM requires that it be configured specific to the serial number of the engine it is being installed on. Is that something that can be done by me on the boat? Or, does it have to come from the factory, pre-configured specific to my Serial Number?

I may have the option of buying one from an individual who has a new one in-the-box but is not a VOLVO dealer. If I can do it myself what are the steps, assuming I can do it on the EDC panel on the dash?
