Default Reconditioned turbo?

I need to replace the turbo on my 2000 S40 2.0T. I can get a reconditioned one for a third of the price of a new one. They also give me a 1 year guarantee. I know very little about turbos and I therefore need advice on whether it's advisable to go for the reconditioned part or should I rather just cough up the money for a new one?

If you have 400 bucks it might me worth looking into a 14t upgrade...if you want more power then you can find a 14t from japanwarehouse on ebay...otherwise buy a new 12t...reconditioned turbo's arent worth it...if it was my car i would go new, its kind of like buying used shoes when your old ones wear out, not worth it....

Remember with a turbo upgrade you should get an ECU remap.

To...

1. Take full advantage of the bigger turbo.

2. So that you don't harm the engine.

Okay, thanx a lot for the help.....so far...Pleasehelp me with acouple ofdumb questions:
1. My engine type is B4204T3. Will the 14t turbo fit on it without any modifications?
2. Why is the 14t on ebay so much cheaper than what the dealers sell it for? Is it in any way inferior?
3. What willthe ECU remap entail? Must it be done by a dealer? Not sure where to go to have it done in my location.... South Africa...

If you have the stock engine of the S40 then yes you should be able to bolt the 14t right on. If you go to s40concepts theres a whole forum on how to. The 14t on ebay is much cheaper because that company buy them in bulk and usually has a decent quantity on hand. If you decide to upgrade to a 14t you're looking at more power and I would highly recommend have your ecu upgraded by upsolute or rica or any of those chiptuning places that do volvo, and it would be a good idea to upgrade to a 3" turbo back exhaust...just so the engine breathes better with more power...the exhaust probably isnt mandatory for the 14t but you definitely will have to have the ecu software upgraded.

mcguij1, thank you very much for all the info. I found the link to s40concepts on S70driver's links page. I also found out that we do indeed have a local upsolute branch not too far from where I live. I am going to order my 14T right now. I'll propably have to wait a week or two for it, but I reckon it's worth it. I'll have a dyno done afterwards and report backwith the results. Thanx again.

no problem, have the turbo put on before you upgrade the ecu...are you planning on an exhaust upgrade?? also, it would be imperative to install a boost gauge to read what kind of boost you're getting, with the the 14t you shouldnt be running more than 12 psi without upgrading the exhaust and ecu to play it safe...

Damn, I didn't realize that the ecu remap would be that expensive - R5,000, which is about 710 USD!! Do they charge the same sort of amounts where you guys are? Perhaps I should go for the stock 12t as I really don't have that kind of bucks right now. How safe is it to run the 14t at12 psi without the ecu? Can I damage the motor?

if you dont have the money then I would stick with the stock turbo 12t for now. It cost 550 at my local upsolute dealer for the chiptune....i wouldnt run your engine on 12psi on the 14t unless you're changing the exhaust and ecu only because you're dealing with a bigger turbo and a lot of guys will tell you that if they install a 14t and they dont remap the ecu something bad goes wrong, stick with a new 12t and get a manual boost controller and you could push 12 psi with it and you'll have quite a bit more power....
