99 Cougar Catalytic Converter
Daughters boyfriend has 99 Cougar. Mercury dealer says catalytic converter is bad. Quoting $850 to replace. Looking online it looks like it is a bolt in piece. Does anyone know what is involved in replacing it? If we could do it and save him a ton of money that would be great.
On this site: http://www2.partstrain.com/v5/produc...294967270+5760 they offer bolt on and clamp, depends on how much work you want to put into it.
Hey what am I doing? This is not a Volvo. LOL

You don't have to get a OEM.
You can have an exhaust shop fab a custom one for which will be significantly cheaper (and you will get some gains). Or you can look around online and find one that matches his piping size.

Tech, I think it is a single exhaust. Not looking for horsepower gains just looking to not spend $850, which he doesn't have to spend any way. So if we could get one and the clamps etc. and do the install ourselves it would save him a bunch. When he gets back from Idaho we'll pick up the car and bring it over to my house and put it up on the ramps and see what we face. Appreciate the responses and if we decide to get into it I may be back asking more questions. You guys are great. Thanks.

I'm just saying that there are options significantly cheaper than $850. You need to take a look at the exhaust of the car.
Depending on how it's set up, you might be able to just remove the cat and replace it. Or it might have pipes welded to it (such as a 2 piece exhaust), and a simple cat isn't enough. Call up an exhaust shop. It's not going to be that expensive.
And in my earlier comment, I mistyped. An exhaust shop will not fab a cat. They will buy a cat and fab an exhaust system (such as upgrading the piping diameter). Or you could bring in an aftermarket cat and have them weld it in.

I understand Red. Once we know what we face, we'll take it to a couple of shops and get a price. I'm hoping we can get it done significantly cheaper than $850. Luckily I wasn't chewing gum when he told me the price or I would have swallowed it.
Exhaust work bites, I can see why they charge so much. Most the time they replace more thanthey haveto, making there job easier and your bill harder. But, you save so much $ doing it yourself. You could cut/unbolt the old out and clamp/bolt a new in for $70-$200. Jack it up safe with stands andtellyour daughters boyfriendto get under there. If he can do it he is one step closer to your approval.
Hey what am I doing? This is not a Volvo. LOL again

I'm a dad, I'll never approve of anyone who wants to date my daughter!
I think I'm gonna get the hacksaw and the clamps ready.
