Click on the link http://download.cnet.com/windows/ and look on the bottom right side of the page! Cnet will categorize the software.. AVG right now is one of the best out there and the license for home use is free! Also look on that page IObit 360 and Advanced systems care. All are free and work great. I use all 3 on my laptop...

I've use Trend Micro's PCCillian for years. Now they call it Internet Securities. One license covers 3 computers. It also has the SpyWare cleaner built in. www.AntiVirus.com. I think you can try it for 30 days free.

As for speed, because of Windows Updates, you need more and more ram just to run Windows smoothly. If you are running XP you should have 1 gig of RAM, min. If you are running Vista, you need to have 2 gig min. If you are running Windows 7, you should have 3 gigs or more. Go CONTROL PANEL then SYSTEM to check your RAM.

AVG works well, especially since it costs nothing. Add a free firewall and i doubt you will have any problems.

The free version of AVG is really a great product. It auto updates and I notice no slowness from its use. For home use it can't be beat.

For enterprise level stuff McAfee is the most stable and easiest to administer and deploy. Also interferes the least with other applications.

I'm a server administrator for a 5 hospital/mulitiple clinic health org here in Oregon.

AVG really has become bloated over the years. I would strongly suggest checking out Microsoft Security Essentials!

Hmm... Well I will certainly check it out. In the past, Microsoft's security products have been nothing more than marketing and nifty icons. CNET sure thinks highly of it. I'll install it and compare its resource usage and install footprint against AVG.

I ran latest AVG for 2 months, comp went slow & picked up 2 worms .
Switched to Windows Security Essentials & cleaned everything.
Totally changed the speed from slow to above average.
Also check out http://support.microsoft.com/search/...og=LCID%3D1033
for further advice direct from microsoft.
Good luck

McAfee updates their new antivirus software with a few bells and whistles making it a good antivirus competitor.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 comes in close behind Norton only because of a slightly slower scanning speed and slightly lower malware detection rate.

On the plus side, McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 holds its own again this year with a solid antivirus model, good antispyware, and a software firewall that many other antivirus applications simply don't offer.

While McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 isn't perfect, it's a respectable choice for those comfortable with McAfee's history of competent antivirus software.

You'll find lots of the same features, just more streamlined and easier to use.
