rpsi: You seem pretty knowledgeable; I joined this forum to learn as much as I can from folks like you.

In 1968 when I was 20, I purchased a Works 1965 Lotus Competition Elan, (Vengantune / BRM) from Lotus through Fred Opert Racing in New Jersey. It was shipped to the East Coast from England, then Flown on a United Cargo Plane, ( weighed under 900 lbs), to San Francisco where my best friend an I picked it up using Pierre's Motors Racings '65 Ford wagon, (the cast iron comanche),and Trailer. We got it to Portland, and that night we went out, My employer Pierre Phillips, and myself in pouring rain and drove up I-84 at night with only one headlamp, and faulty wipers, achieving 168 mph indicated. Later the Lotus was sold to Arnie Loyning, the future race engine builder, who also worked for Pierre, but at a later time. Scary Fun! I believe I paid $4600 for the Lotus, using my 1962 Lotus super 7 as a trade in through Pierre, and financed the balance through US Bank. The Good Old Days!!

I hope you are not on the freeway in front of me. 50 mph is dangerous in most interstate situations.

As a driver...135. Hit the limiter in my Mom's New Beetle 1.8t. In high school, having something with a turbo meant a challenge

As a passenger...I would guesstimate around 145ish in my Dad's coworker's Saleen SVT Cobra droptop. He was a weekend racer (no, really). For those of you familiar with the SF Bay Area, we achieved this with some traffic on 680...he was truly a smooth driver, it scarcely felt like more than 70mph.

I amazed the other posters in a Jeep Cherokee forum with the story of how I took my dad's Cherokee to well over 150mph when I was 16, and it was a four cylinder.

Only later did I tell them that it was a Piper Cherokee... (four place airplane for those of you not familiar with them).

Fastest on the road was no doubt on one of the bikes I owned in my younger, stupider days. I still remember leaning over the tank of my Yamaha 650 as I topped 120mph, thinking "hmmmm, now that I think about it that front tire is really weather-checked". I was immortal then, but have slowed down a lot... The driver's ed teacher told his students I'd be dead behind the wheel before I was 18. I am kind of amazed he didn't get it right (by coming on 40 years).

I have no idea what the top end on my V70 T5 is, but it's pulling like a freight train as it tops 100mph (errrr, so I've been told since I understand that kind of thing is illegal).

I went 165mph in my friends tuned Supra, backed off immediately because I realized how stupid I was to be going that fast for everyones safety and the risk of a ticket.. then again I was 18. I guess we all do dumb things when we're young!

Certainly nothing to boast about here, but I used to hit around 150mph in my brother's 3.2L Porsche Boxster. That was out of frustration more than anything. Driving back home after a night-shift of sheer and utter boredom at work.

These days however, I think back and wonder how I could have been such an idiot. I drive within the speed limits now, and never deviate from that since I don't wish to jeapordize my own life or that of anyone else's.
