Man, I Got Spanked The Other Day...
No Mods For Me Yet. I recently got the car stock and really want to see what it will do after it's all tuned up and running at near peak condition before I do anything to it. I wanted to get a car that was stock, to me that increased the odds of me getting a car that wasn't flat out abused. Also, I kinda like the idea that it's a sleeper that can hang with other cars with no steriords.
I've been considering mods to make it a better sleeper. The thing that gets me about this model R is that the chip is programmed to kick in the extra 16 hp "in the first 5 seconds of acceleration", what ever that means.
(Probably why I got the hose - tried to get hose in the thread for Lyonsroar. LOL) I interpet that to mean that you experience it's extra preformance from a dead stop. However, it could also mean that it kicks in if you totally back off of the accelerator, then punch it, which I think may be the case at times. If you think about it, by the time you hit 5 seconds, you are going about 60 mph, the speed limit in most cases.
Someone stopped by my office and asked to purchase my Yellow R. I'm tempted to sell it and purchase another one a little cleaner, really would rather have a yellow wagon (dream on). I see one for sale in Seattle that appears to be in good condition that has mods (against my basic rule). The only thing I don't like about it is that it has been lowered, a sure cop magnet. I guess I can purchase it and raise it back up. He also claims that it has been moded, which includes a chip (maybe iPd) that raises the hp form 240 to 270. My question would be; does that make it 270 for the 1st 5 seconds or anytime?
Another down side to a lowered car is that I use the car for my real estate business and don't want to turn off my customers with a truely "kids car" look (as if the yellow and black doesn't do that already
).
I hope to change my plugs and get the car to the track before I do any mods. I must say, I'm still impress with a mid-size family sedan that throws things around (off my dash, etc.) when I punch it.

Definitely agree with trying to buy a car that's been "un-molested" and getting your car to a state of optimal performance before attempting to modify it yourself and yes there is something to say for a stock car that can keep up with some modified ones.

The "R" trim ECU allows for a couple extra pounds of boost, but like the regular Turbo's there is a torque limiter that prevents you from seeing full boost in 1st. The extra HP (coming from higher turbo pressure) is applied throughout the power-band. I forget how fast it is, but i think what you're referring to when you "let off and punch" it is a kickdown (40mph?) and that's when the trans will downshift for some extra oomph.

I would probably buy the other one before trying to sell yours - those cars are rare and sought after which might only lead to you being yellow-less (a tragedy :P). I might be biased, but when i see mods on a volvo it's not the same as other cars. A lot of people aren't really that discerning, I drove very low audi s4 and i would get compliments on it all the time - but see a civic hatch as low and it's a completely different story. Personally, i think it would take a lot of "fooling" around to make it appear as a kids car - even most cat-back exhausts for our cars only create a pleasant hum. You can do a lot to these cars before you give off the "tuner look". k&n filter, cat back exhaust, and a tune and you'll have yourself a nice little secret you can keep from your clients :P
As far as the tune goes, it essentially alters the characteristics of the turbo and how it operates. Gives you 3-6lbs more boost and allows it to come on earlier and a littler harder and like i said earlier it is applied all through the cars acceleration. If you want, you can justify it by better MPG
I hope to change my plugs and get the car to the track before I do any mods. I must say, I'm still impress with a mid-size family sedan that throws things around (off my dash, etc.) when I punch it.
That is the most important thing, getting the car to run like it's supposed to and really if i hadn't had the job i did in my "formative driving years" i'd probably have no desire to mod my car either, because it really is plenty fast as it is for everyday driving but driving modded cars can lead you down a slippery slope

Thanks for the input. I'll definately tune it up and go from there, one little step at a time. I'm not real sure why the Volvo site said the extra R hp only applied to the 1st 5 seconds???
A racing story from when I was a a teenager, and I remember it like it was yesterday even though it was more than 40 years ago.
I was driving my 61 Plymouth Fury with the push button transmission, 318 4 barrell carb, single exhaust. Mine was a two door and I found one the same color only in a 4 door and we started racing. I beat him and I guess he got pissed off. My buddy and I were 17 year old HS students and the guys in the other car were older.
Once I beat them the kept coming up on my rear and just being real jerks. I let them get in front of me and we got on a dark road and they stopped. When I tried to go around them they would swerve and not let me buy them. Then two guys get out of their car with chains and a tire iron and start walking towards my car. I started blowing the horn and backing up. The other car backed up too while the two guys kept walking. Neeless to say we were pretty scared.
Then a car came up behind me and the two guys got back in their car and started going. They would not let me bye them and would literally swerve over every time I tried to pass them. The guy who was behind me passed both of us. We came to a place in the road where there is a left turn onto an on ramp to I-70. If they went straight I would turn, if they turn I would go staight.
Well the guy in front decides to block the road and puts his car sideways across the road and the two guys get out again. I turn up the down side of the ramp going the wrong direction. In those days they didn't have rails between the lanes just those humps kind of like a big speed bump. When I got up far enough I jumped the median so I was now going the right direction.
They got behind me going up the ramp. They weren't going to pass me again unless they had more than they showed when we actually raced. I took off on I-70 back to my home town. I got off the exit I normally use and they get off behind me and followed me. I would come to stop signs and slow down just enough to know there was no other cars and would run the stop sign. A cop at this time did not seem like a bad thing to me.
Well I grew up in a mostly black neighborhood and I led them to a bar where there was a bunch of guys haning out in front of the bar. I knew them enough to feel comfortable stopping there. So I pulled off right in front of them and jumped out of my car and walked up to the guys hanging out. They guys in the car just kept on going and luckily I never saw them again.
Today guys like that would have probably shot us.

That is scary, you never know what people will do.
I had a fun win last summer as I was taking two of my girls home from school. It was BMW lowered, stereo booming and loud exhaust weaving in and out of traffic.
I finally caught him at a light and told my kids that we are about to race the car next to us. The asked how I knew, I just said, "I know".
Light turned green and we left, of course he got the jump but as the boost kicked in we quickly closed the gap and passed him up in a Station Wagon...Gotta Love it!
Insult to injury I had my kids wave to him as we passed.

Gotta love the support of the kids.
One day me and my daughter was in her S70 GLT at a light just off the freeway (about to make a left hand turn) and I pulled next to a Mustang. I started edging forward and so did he. When the light changed we both jumpped. I punched it to spin my tires and smoke was going everywhere, I backed off so he could catch up and as he passed I punched it again - more smoke. I heard him rev but I beat him to 50 by about 1-1/2 car legnths. Well, since we were at the speed limit I backed off and the mustang went on down the road. My daugher was on the phone the whole time.
About 2 miles down the road I seen a cop car racing towards me with lights blazing. It was not 1 state trooper but 2. When he got near me I pulled off the road and he pulled behind me. My daughter had her college license plate on the back (pic of a red wolf) and I had recently tinted all of her windows 5% below the law. Anyway, when he stated walking toward the car I rolled down both windows and he looked through the window on my daughters side. When he say me, a 45 year old kid, he stood up and looked around then looked in again. He had this puzzeled look on his face and asked "were you the one that just pulled off from the light up the road... with your tires smoking???" I looked him dead in the eyes and said, "are you referring to that mustang that went tearing off at the light and is now LONG GONE?" I then added, "my daughter and I just got done fishing and we are one our way to get something to eat". Then paused while he still stood there with that puzzeled look. He then said that he was not planning to write any ticket but was going to tell some kid to stop horsing around on the roads, and just stopped talking. I hunched my sholders and he just shook his head and told me to have a nice day. LOL
After we pulled away my daughter told me that she was trying to point them out to me while we were at the light. She claims that both state troopers were across the street about 100 feet down trying to help a lady change a tire. I guess I thought she was speaking to someone on the phone and was paying to much attention to the guy in the mustang and not enough on what she was saying.

Hey JimKW, I hate sore loosers. Emphesis on the later part of that sentance.
I was trying to get out of the lot at my office one day and I seen a little bread so I pulled across 2 lanes and into the fast lane in the direction I wanted to go. I then notice that the car approaching in my mirror started seeding up, I guess to hurass me about pulling out, so I punched it. He almost got close and changed lanes, I guess to try to get around me. I kept my gas pressed and started pulling away to get to the next light and the guy would not quit. Once I stopped at the light the guy actually pulled into the left turn lane, rolled down his window so I rolled mine down. He asked "What are you doing?" Some thug looking guy trying to impress his girl. I said just trying to make sure I wasn't in your way. So he said something and I told him that he could get ahead of me and he did.
Trying to diffuse people's ego problems can be tricky.

Well don't feel too bad out there. I had a 2004 neon srt-4 stage 3 turbo. I was spanking just about everything i came across....until.................I met my demise. Florida turnpike 3am doing about 80 ish when I started seeing headlight pulling up behind me. I slowed down figuring a FLORIDA STATE TROOPER,but nope. A black unbadged volvo wagon. SOB, down shifted and started smoking his tires at a rolling 50MPH..I pulled hard along side him..but all I heard was a BOV and all I saw where taillights.Granted I was pushing 18psi and 345 hp on pump gas,low 12's in the QTR and that SOB pulled away from 60mph to over 120. NOW I WANNA MEET HIM and flip that hood. it was either a 740 or a 940. It was rear wheel drive. Soooo i did the next honorable thing....I went on the hunt and bought a 940 turbo wagon....

I hard one like that before, about 25 years ago, when I was in the Air Force. A friend of mine was traveling on an interstate doing about 75ish and up crept a 244. When they were side by side he, in his Camaro, punched it and they were off, neck and neck. He slowed down a little to take a curve (to about 85ish) and the Volvo didn't. When they came out of the curve, he said the tail lights on the Volvo just vanished, kind of like a Star Trek space ship going into warp drive.

So I feel a little better. I found out a couple of days ago that the Cobolt that blew my doors off a few weeks ago is modded and has over 400 HP. Dang. Why would someone put that much power in a Cobolt???

Lol !! A stock turbo COBALT would blow your doors off !! They are around 300lb.s lighter then 850's and have 260hp stock.A tune takes them to around 320ish bhp.The majority of modded 850 TURBO's are no match for a tuned COBALT TURBO.Thats just facts.

Yea, that's what I figured. They are actually about 600lbs lighter. I believe they are super charged, not turbo. But either way, a car that light with that much HP is real fast.
No.They are about 350lb.s lighter.Look on CHEVY's website. And the supercharged ones only have around 205bhp.The new ones are turbo.Do some research man.

Well, I did check the site a few months back. My memory indicated that it was tagged as a Super Charged motor but Now I see it says Turbo. Also, the curb weight of the Cobalt is 2926 ( http://www.chevrolet.com/vehicles/20...pe/features.do ) and the curb weight of my car is 3340 ( https://www.customers.volvocars.com/...9_7.html#pg9.7 )
so, when I do the math it's 414 lbs different from specs.
Anywho, the one that dusted me was modded beyond Boost Creeps knowledge and bottom line is I got dusted.

heh... in my 2001 s80 t6
I met this dodge charger must have been the slower model, I mistakingly drifted into his lane, and i even apologized to him through the mirror...
Well he hops into the lane I was in trying to get infront of me ... go figure lol... So as I seen him do it, I punch it, here we're going 55, and we're pretty much neck and neck all the way to about 120~, and then I think his limiter kicked in so Im cruising like 123...124... lol ever so slowly pulling away from him lol.... then I slowed down a bit again let..get to his speed which was still 120~, and pulled away from him again lol..... i get the high beams...as if he wants more lol..priceless I just kept going.
yes I also too got schooled by that neon srt4, we were on the highway.... and he pulled away decently fast by me in second gear, and I could hear his engine big time roaring over mine lmao....
