Can't open hood of 98 xc70
When I pull on the hood latch, the right side hangs up and won't open. Any suggestions? I need to check my oil level more frequently than going to the dealer as my car is burning up oil now!!
There's a trick
You pull the latch then go in front of the wagon and slide a pen into the left side latch from the front (over the headlight) to pop the latch
Once you get the feel of it, it's very easy to do.
The other way is to have two people, one to open the latch and hold it while you lift the hood at the center.
It's adjustable..... but that's another story

Thanks for the info. When I am looking at the hood and pushing the center latch, it appears that the hood section to my right is the one hanging up. I tried a screwdriver but that didn't work. The hood latch under the dash feels loose. I'll try the front as you suggest.
It's a 2 step process for me. I pull the latch and go to raise the hood, only to find it hung up on one side.
I go back and pull the hood latch a second time and the other latch releases. I imagine that someday, based on what I've read in this thread, it won't.

I have the same problem with my car but I think in his case the latch might be broken. If one side opens and the other doesn't and you are unable to pull it up while someone pulls on the release you are going to have to reach in under the hood and pull on the lever that is on the back of the catch. This is where the cable connects to the release. It's possible the cable is either disconected or broken.
I did the trick of pulling latch once and opening front, then went back and pulled the hood release a second time and that worked! Awesome! Thanks for the great tip!
