Default [240] Help identifying this part

This is totally an emasculating post, but I don't care. My girlfriend is awesome and she knows way more about cars than I do. She has a 1987 Volvo 240 and this part broke (pictured). She can't figure out what it's called to try to replace it. She believes it has to do with the cold start system. It's some kind of rubber seal with a spring inside. If you could help me help her figure out what this thing is called so we can order a replacement, it would really make me the hero. Thanks!

Does the car have cruise control and if so does it still work? The way the cable goes around the throttle drum it looks like a link for the cruise control.

Looks like the top of the Cruise Control Bellows which is split in half (the part where the spring is showing).

That's it! I'm the hero! Thank you guys so much! Any idea if the same part for the 740 is compatible with the 240? There's one on eBay for $45 right now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-740-76...1d7e22&vxp=mtr

They are also on a lot of mid '80's Volkswagens. I doubt the functionality is different between makes and models. Not really a precision part.

I dont think 240's ever used a cruise actuator right there. The old system is some HUGE diaphragm mounted over by passenger strut tower with a long cable going to throttle. NO? I cant tell in the pic, but that cruise diaphragm doesnt even look mounted to anything

On my 1990 240 the cruise diaphragm is down by the gas pedal.

Maybe somebody swapped in a 740 engine or intake parts.....maybe I am just confused.

That makes much more sense!

They are about $70 new from dealer when I bought one maybe 10 years ago.

If you need a used one, they are everywhere.

I need to fix my cruise control still on my 240. Once you fix this part, make sure all wires and hoses are connected to the switches down at the pedal. Also make sure switches are getting pressed in by the pedal/s properly.

If you fix your girl's cruise control she should be pretty impressed and happy with ya!

She was actually over the moon not only that I found the part but also because it's not important enough for her to replace so she doesn't need to spend the money or time working on it. (Like I said in the original post, she'd probably end up doing it herself, I was just trying to figure out what the damn thing was called. Haha.) The whole actuator has been removed so it's not an issue.

Ya cruise control obviously isnt a crucial system for the engine to run.

Since you have a pre 1988 740 I would mostly be concerned about degrading wiring harness issues. It has the ol' biodegradable engine wiring harness that likes to rot out all over the place. Especially at the wires going to the fuel injectors. If you ever have running issues. I would look there first for bad wires.

on our 87 240, the cruise bellows is down by the gas pedal under the dash, and pulls directly on the gas pedal with a short bowden cable, which completely rusted out 10+ years ago.

I had an 86 745 GLE and it had plenty of crusty wires falling apart. Luckily I crashed the car a few times and killed it.

at least some late model year 87 seem to be OK from eco-junk wiring.

I knew a guy that had a 1987 740 whom snipped the entire wiring harness in half at the firewall! hahahahahha. I think he was trying to cut out bad wiring. I personally traced out each wire and got that thing back and running.
