Default ‘80 240 all lights cut out

Hey there, new to the boards after skimming for an answer for this problem...

I currently have a 1980 244 DL that likes to cut out all of the lights (headlights/tail lights/dash lights/even the damn clock) on certain turns, potholes and moreso after it rains. I’m mostly looking for some advice on where to start, I assume some of the connections may be bad but was wondering if anyone else has encountered this. Thank you!

i'd be looking at the power wiring under the dash.

i've never owned a 240 as old as 1980, do the headlights stay on when you shut off the car? on our 1987, only if it was in 'parking lights', would those stay on, if the headlight switch was 'on', then everything went off with the key.

the clock is on its own completely different 'always on' circuit.... or do you mean the illumination for the clock, which is connected to the rest of the dashboard lights and driven off the headlight switch...

I doubt its a ground, because the dashboard stuff vs the headlights use completely different grounds (headlights are grounded up front next to each headlight, while the dash stuff is grounded on the sides of the transmission hump, just forward of the gear shift lever).

mainly, tho, I'd be looking at the power connections into the headlight switch.

sounds like a good place to start. Check the wiring to the headlight switch, then (pull your battery cables first!) take the screws holding down the fuse box out and check for any loos wires on the back. they are spade terminals. after that give all the fuses a spin in thier holder, or replace them. report back.

i'd check the condition of the 'positive terminal'... on the later 240s, its a flat black plastic box on the left fender relay bracket that has a whole pile of fat red wires going into the bottom. this gets power directly from the battery, and things like the ignition switch, headlight switch, various relays get their power from this. if its gotten wet and corroded all bets are off. also check the battery cables.
