Default 1979 Volvo 242DL Dash Gauges And Light stopped working?

1979 Volvo 242DL 2.1.
OK, here we go.
Battery is 2.5 years old.
I replaced the Alternator back in 01/12!
Lifetime Warranty.
Never charged that well, MAX 12.5V.
Ran with it for roughly five months
One week ago the Amp light came on and the temp/fuel/tach went haywire bouncing all over the place, then stopped working and then came back on??
OK, last Saturday I was cruising along and the same scenario occurred, only this time the gauges and lights did not operate period.
Previous to this mystery when I turned the ignition switch to ON, I always had the oil, amp light etc.
Start her up and I had gauges and the lights of course went out.
Yesterday, new alternator, again!!
No lights, NO gauges, 12.54 volts, hand held quick check.
Battery tested OK.
Today I take Ellie to John Ellis auto service in Sacramento, CA.
On the way the gauges start working just fine.
Oil change, clutch adjust and a comprehensive starting and charging system analysis.
They spent some quality time with the car and I received a phone call with the diagnosis.
The technician states that when starting the vehicle to bring it into the shop, NO GAUGES, NO LIGHTS ON start up.
Alternator is charging just fine 13.1V. No starting or charging issues per the test results and the technician.
Technician states the instrument panel electrical issue is SEPARATE from the S/C system.
Car runs fine.
In fact there was a miss and uneven running that has completely disappeared when the lights, gauges failed??
I checked fuse 13 and it APPEARS to be OK??
Any ideas???

Thanks Obby

my first guess: flakey ground or other wiring somewhere between the instrument panel and the engine.
