Haha. Yeah. I like to do something right the first time, and continue till I get a good balance of craft and money spent. Hopefully this summer will look up for me. It's almost Been a couple years since we got the car and started to collect.

Okay, havent updated this in a while.

It failed smog 2 weeks ago. It is on a stock exhaust/ original cat, but It would have passed if cali didn't lower the maximum allowed in the emisson testing by ~40%. Anyways, so in those two weeks, the car finally got polished and 2 coats of wax. new plugs, plug wires, and cap and rotors. The car is currently at the shop getting a 3" turboback exhaust. should be a nice setup when he finishes. Pictures as they get done.

When did they lower the thresholds, and do they apply to all cars? My car barely passed last year, which I attributed to mods and not to changed standards. Actually, I believe my car's emissions were in fact higher than before. Also, how old does a car have to be in order to be exempt? 30 years? If so, yours is soooo close.

We checked our previous smog sheets. the 91 745T seemed to drop every 5 years, but small numbers.

My dads, 79 transAM hasent dropped in 10 years.

I wish it is a rolling 30... Right now, it is 75 and oldder
This 40% drop was only for the 82 244 and during this year. it is super annoying.

I really dont see where they get these number from. if they keep dropping it, The car will not pass at all.

The plumbing looks tight. Stance looks just right. Now for a sound clip? What's next on the agenda, assuming it passes. Is that an CARB-compliant cat? Was the original cat on there when you tried to pass it before?

awhile back, California was raising the cuttoff date for smog every year, basically a 30 year old. in 2006, they decided to freeze it at 1975.

so a car has to be 75 or earlier to be exempt from all smog in California, and it will be there forever..

we have a totally stock 1987 240GL, original owner, about 400K miles. 3 years ago, our mechanic said it was *barely* passing smog and only then after he got it hot as all heck by driving it really really hard, screaming into the smog bay, and testing it immediately. so last year, we broke down and replaced the original cat (and O2 sensor, while we were at it). it passed with flying colors after that.

It is a cal pre-obd2 cat... Sound clip will come soon.
Tomorrow it will get smogged, so we'll see what happens.
It failed on the original cat.

I live in Little Rock Arkansas which is a small city. It has a population of about 180,000 and serves about 1/2 million (people that commute daily for work, etc.). The other day, the news caster announced that we fail smog test and brushed it off as if he said that it rained for about 5 minutes. Talked about it for about 12 seconds. How in the world can a city as small as our's fail a smog test.

Now we have NO inspections at all. The only reason I can figure we did is that most of these old trucks don't even have an exhaust and we have a lot of humidity (and very little wind) that may be keeping the smog close to the ground.

I actually feel kinda sorry for you guys in the smog testing you have to endure.

Other than that, I love your 244, it's great. Keep up the good work. You have probably sold more Volvo's than any sales person at the closest stealer. You know, Volvo should reward us for keeping their cars on the road. It makes them look good.

yeah, really s**ks to have to maintain your vehicle to some basic level of cleanliness so it doesn't poison the air we breathe. $70 every other year for the test and certify really breaks the bank.

I live in a small coastal town that has never had any trace of air pollution as we get a nearly constant westerly breeze off the north pacific, so any smog we might produce would just blow inland... inland over someone else's town. why should we have to smog? its their problem!

I wouldnt be much surprised to see zero HP difference with the cat vs the test tube. other than noise.

Sounds perfect to me. But hey, I'm old. Really like the side exit. Looks like it almost wants to scrape on the way out of the driveway though.

You gain a few ponies, but the reason is so the cat doesn't get destroyed from the track days, and race fuel. beside, I dont want to by another cat ever again...

thanks. It does look close, but there is room. Lucky it has only scraped on one speed bump, which was overkill anyways. I think I'm going to raise the front up slightly... Might raise the whole car one turn.

I THOUGHT I recognized that street!! OP we used to skate together years ago back when Eric used to live next door. Small world this is so weird. I always look over at your house to see all the Volvo's and the e39, my house looks very similar. 122s, 544s, p1800s and a million 240/740/850/s60s roaming through our driveway. The car looks great!

^ I dont blame you. It was a long time ago and would be a random thing when we would be hanging outside Eric's house. Basketball, skating, whatever. We were probably both around 9-11 yrs old. LONG time ago. Interesting to see you in Volvo's as well!

It's been a while.

Not much Change for everything is working great. Put new u joints in today. Also I finally put a boost gauge in the car. Now it just needs an AF wideband gauge then I can stick the new wastegate actuator in.
