Question 1983 240 GL Will start but doesn't like to stay running.

So my 83 240 GL is having an issue.
She will start up, but not stay running. It started about a week ago by just dying at red lights. Now it doesn't matter where or when, It will just quit.
I was able to drive it with the over drive off and in 1st gear.

I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, alternator, air filter, and cleaned out the air intake. (Which I found a yellow liquid in) I even checked for a vacuum leak on all hoses.

I unplugged the Mass airflow sensor while it was running and the engine changed to a slow surge.

Right now it idles just below 1000 RPM. Runs for 30 seconds and shuts off. If I put it in gear, it also shuts off.

Whew...

Thanks!

Ryan

What is usually asked here is can you read the diagnostic codes and if so what are they. The other areas associated with this is the fuel pump relay and the RSR (radio suppression relay) . See if you can get the codes first and we'll see how to proceed.

"Volvo started using self-diagnostics on its Bosch LH 2.4 engine management systems in 1988 on 700 series non-turbo cars and in Regina-equipped cars."

I could be over looking something, but what if it's an 83?

Sorry I couldn't recall when they started. I used to have a 83 240 and still have a set of factory manuals. I'll see if I can find something there.

there's no diag box on our 87 240. at this point, I think I'd suggest checking the fuel pressure with an appropriate fuel pressure gauge, and verifying spark with a timing light. much better than replacing parts at random.
