Default 1987 240 Wagon - Starting Fluid Fix?

So the problem began with the car starting and then cutting out when I would go to drive it to work in the morning.

1. Turn Ignition.
2. Car starts right up.
3. Put it into gear. (automatic)
4. Slowly fades away as soon as its in gear.

Initially I sort of managed to solve the problem by giving it a little throttle in neutral and quickly moving off once I was in gear. Throughout the day it would start fine but if left over night the problem would return.

The problem then evolved, within a week it would take two or three attempts to get the car to started in the morning. (cranking fine but not turning over).

As each day went by it would take 3-4 more attempts before it would start. This lasted 2 days.

Finally, 2 days ago I got about 100m down the road before it died in the slow 'power down' style fade away as before.

After 4-5 attempts it started again.

Yesterday i got 50m down the road and she died. Now the car cranks and does not start. If I put a short burst of starting fluid into the air intake It will crank and then the starting fluid will hit the engine which will 'start' before fading away.

Suggesting that I have a fuel issue?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Iain

Exactly, you have problems with your fuelpump.During the week gone by you have consumed gas and now the pump which is probably rusted and having holes at the point it enters the tank, now cant do its work properly to supply gas.Try filling upp the gas a little and most probably it will start as the burden on the pump will reduce

Thanks Sicnarf. I understand that there are two Fuel Pumps. Is there any way to work out which one has failed. I will be replacing the fuel filter as well. Thanks, Iain.

Incidentally, I think it is the In-tank pre pump that is defective as I also noticed the tell-tale 'sucking/gurgling/rattling' sound of the main pump sucking fumes. Described here:
In the Tank - 240 Volvo Tank Pump and Sender

It is interesting to note that the defect started immediately after I had the engine mounts changed... I will have a look at the fuel pump relays to see if something got knocked by the mechanic.

Thanks.

Dont think your mechanic is that careless :-) but if it so then you better find another. Anyway I dont thin your relay is at fault here as the starting fluid would not help to start it otherwise. However you can allways change it and try.
