Default 1987 Volvo 245 DL backfiring after air flow meter replacement

I am trying to get my daughters 1987 Volvo 245 DL running. About a month ago the car died along the road and I had it towed to my house and determined that the air flow meter was bad. I replaced it with a used one and it ran for about 2 weeks and then it started back firing when she was trying to drive it. She attempted to drive it to my house and it died about a block from my house. I found that the air flow tubing that ran from the air flow meter to the throttle body had a big split in the bottom of it and was sucking air there past the air flow meter before the throttle body. I took that off and repaired it and put it back on this morning tried starting the car and it still did it. I tried putting a second used air flow meter that was known to be good as it was taken off a running car and it still did the back firing. I noticed on the air flow tubing near the throttle body one of the rubber vacuum lines about an inch in size was attached to the air flow tube and the bottom of the hose was attached to nothing, it was just hanging down I tried to plug the line to see if that made a difference. I had to get going to work and that did nothing it still ran the same back firing, misfiring etc. Can anyone tell me what this line may attach to and would this line sucking air in cause this back firing and running like crap. There is another line also ~one inch attached to the radiator side of the intake line attached with a hose clamp, this one just slid on and was twards the fire wall. Any other things to check to possibly get this car running would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dave

well, ~ 1" hoses under the throttle body could be the idle air controller,or it could be the EGR valve (if you have one).

any opening in the air path between the MAF and the engine will cause problems, possibly including backfiring. also exhaust leaks can cause that, too. so can a slipped timing belt thats 1-2 teeth off.
