Hi, everyone, newbie here. Just recently got an '88 244 that's a project car, main problem was rear lights not working, has been solved. After getting the lights working today, I took it to the wash to clean the dirt and dust off it and discovered the sunroof was leaking water inside. I've been googling for answers most of the night, but haven't found anything solid, so I turn here. I read something about some drains that can be clogged and seals. Can someone elaborate on this, please?

 

the sunroof seals aren't ever actually water tight. the sunroof has a 'drip tray' around it that has 4 drain hoses, one in each corner. the front two go to hoses that go down the "A" pillars on either side of the windshield, and drain out under the car, and the back two go down the 'C' pillars behind the back doors and also drain out under the car. on a sedan, at least, you can see the rear hoses if you remove the trunk carpets, they have 'Y' connectors, where the other two hoses connect to the air vent under the back window so it can drain.

various methods of cleaning those hoses mostly revolve around sticking something suitable up the hoses from under the car, then flushing water down the drains from above. I use bicycle brake cables (because I usually have 1 or two lying around from my hobby of tinkering with bikes). to access these hoses from above involves removing the head liner, which be a real pain to do non-destructively on an old car.

 

So, without removing the headliner, there's no real way to get anything into the hoses to flush them down? I was thinking of a long air nozzle to blow down the hoses

 

I use a speedo cable to root out the front holes, they are easy. The back ones are hard without dropping the headliner. In rain season I park the problem leakers front slightly down hill so all the rain water runs out the front holes--not as hard as it sounds...

 

don't use compressed air, it will blow the hoses off the fittings, leaving you with a real mess
