1988 244 - Changing Exhaust Manifold Gaskets
The exhaust manifold gaskets on my 244 DL are nearly disintegrated. I want to change them but all the bolts are rusted bad. What could I do to help get them loose? What to I do if one (or more) breaks?
1: SPRAY SOME WD40 OR PENETRANT "OIL" NOT SPRAY...ALL UP IN THERE....BE GROSS WITH IT...
2: WARM UP THE CAR....GET IT HOT....WHEN YOU START SEEING SMOKE FROM THE OIL...PUT SOME MORE.....SHUT OFF CAR AND TAKE OFF...
IF THEY BREAK...STUDS OR NUTS....
1: CHEAP PART to order from fcpeuro.com or ipdusa.com..nuts and studs or get them from a junk yard car.
when you take off manifold and you need to replace one of the studs...grab them with vise grips....and twist off....if they break close to or flush with the cylinder head...try what I did...
1: Drill a hole in the center....star with an 1/8th drill bit and work up to almost the size of the stud...but not big where you drill the hole walls...
2: drill it flush to the cylinder face...grab a flat head screw driver and place in center of stud...hit with hammer to make a deep enough cut that the screw driver head will grab and spin the stud out.....
IF THE STUDS BREAK BUT HAVE A PIECE STICKING OUT EITHER USE VISE GRIPS OR DO THE FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER METHOD....
I tried an extractor or eazy out...but failed....maybe my way sucked...
HOME DEPOT sells this product that could work....Grabit-Pro

I have had surprisingly good luck removing them even though they were extremely rusted. In some cases, the entire stud came out of the head. When that happened I replaced the stud with a new one. Use the penetrating oil as suggested and keep your fingers crossed.
Heat is your friend, so run the engine.
Mechanic quality sockets, wrenches, and ratchets will aide in the process as well - do not forget gloves - the pipe is hot!
Last thing - support the bottom of the exhaust ... a child will due (especially when hot). OK, I used my floor jack with just enough pressure to keep the weight of the exhaust pipe off the bolts.
