Default 1988 245 B230F installing 1992 B230F

I have a 1988 245 GL B230F Lh 2.2 with a thrown rod. I bought a 1992 B230F LH 2.4. What do I need to change on the 1992 engine to make it work in the 1988 chassis? Specifically, what do i need to do to make the engine work with the Lh 2.2?

the block+head should transfer right over, if you keep the current ignition and injection sytems, intake manifold, fuel injectors, fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator, etc. you'll need to keep your existing 'hall sensor' based distributor and swap it onto the new block, as LH 2.4 uses a crank position sensor instead. if you do this, be VERY careful with the ignition wiring harness for the LH2.2 system as that 87/88 harness is fairly fragile and its unobtanium.

or, you could swap over the superior LH 2.4 system, that would require moving the ECU and ICU from the new car along with the new engine harness into your body. you'd need to cut a notch in your existing transmission's bell housing for the LH2.4 crank position sensor.

oh, if that 92 engine is from a 740/940, you'll need to install a cap where the camshaft mounted distributor goes, and remove a plate where the 240 sidemount distributor goes, thats pretty straight forward. 92+ 740/940 doesn't have a mechanical fan (they used an electric fan on a larger radiator instead), so you'll need to swap the crankshaft fan pulley over, thats trivial.

also, you might need to swap around the mounting positions of the belt driven accessories, I'm not 100% sure, but 88 vs 92 might have the positions of the AC, alternator, and power steering pumps swapped around.

Thanks,

That sound pretty straight forward. I was really nervous I had made a mistake in buying the 1992 240 engine.

Do I need to change the flywheel on the new engine to run with the LH 2.2 fuel management?

I am planning on changing the
timing belt / tensioner
Waterpump
Sparkplugs & wires and the cam / crank seals.
oil pan gasket and new oil plug
Is there anything else I am missing?

What is the bell housing bolt size? I want to mount it to a engine stand to do the work.

as long as both cars are automatics, or both are manuals, a 2.4 flywheel will work on a 2.2 car (but not visa versa).

all those things are really easy to do on the car, except of course, the rear crank seal. highly recommend using real Volvo gaskets, seals, tensioner, and the bougicord spark plug wire set, as there's a lot of junk out there on the aftermarket. In particular avoid anything Uro brand!!! I'd also recommend new engine mounts, and transmission mount (which acts as the third engine mount), parts from IPDusa.com and fcpeuro.com tend to be higher quality than many other resellers, but even there watch the brands, they sell cheap as well as quality stuff due to customer demand.

I'm afraid I have no idea on the bell housing bolt size as I've never had to pull an engine in over a half million miles of volvoing.

Default Getting started

The 240 service manual arrived yesterday..started doing some reading and comparison between the two engines. I think I have a plan for most things but I was wondering if the oxogen sensor off the exhaust manifold for the Lh2.2 will fit in the location of the egr pipe from the exhaust manifold on the 2.4? I really don't want to remove the exhaust manifold unless absolutely necessary.

bellhousing bolts are M12.

i'd leave the upper manifold on the heads of the new engine if its already there, and bolt it up to the downpipe from your car. should be identical. EGR is completely independent of the O2, the EGR pipe comes off that upper manifold... wait, did LH2.2 even *have* EGR ?? I don't think our 87 did. .. anyways, the o2 sensor should be on the downpipe near where it joints the cat pipe.

on my original engine the O2 sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold mounted to the engine. On the motor from the 1992 there is a metal pipe running from the same area in the manifold and the oxygen sensor is in the lower section of the exhaust pipe.

I would like to remove the metal pipe from the exhaust manifold of the 1992 engine and screw the oxygen sensor in its place. is that is possible.

Default Mounting to the engine stand

I have a harbor freight rotating engine stand. I bought four M12 X 80MM bolts to mount the engine on the stand. due to the spacing of the holes I am only able to mount 3 bolts the engine stand bracket to the back of the engine but I am hesitant to put the engine on the stand. The engine is centered on the bracket pretty well but i am curious are the 3 bolts sufficient? this is the complete engine with no accessories.

I have mounted small block ford engines on the same stand and the spacing of the bolts are more symmetrical and it feels more secure.

I would be very sad to crack if i were to damage the block.

huh, I thought the 87/88's had the O2 on the downpipe, too. ours is with my daughter far away in college, so I can't look.
