1989 740 gl shift indicator light
This is such a great forum-I'm anxious to post my question and hope someone can help me.My 740 gl (245k)has a manual transmission.Of recent the shift indicator light has been popping on and off randomly and shifting when it kicks into gear.It had been noticeable at low speeds around town but did pop out of 4th gear while driving 80 mph on highway. So basicly it's malfunctioning. After popping out of gear it shifted back by itself. The volvo mechanic here says it could be the relay switch or an electrical malfunction. What can I expect to pay for this?I think I read on this forum somewhere to check the transmission fluid for a possible cause. This car has run great for me for 5 yrs. How long can one expect to drive this model if maintained well(which I do).
The car is just getting broke in. You still have some time left easily.
I would start with replacing the relay. Turn the key on and then hit the buttom for the overdrive.Listen for the clicking and find the relay. Most of the time the relay is the one that goes bad.

thanks--I certainly don't know how to look for the relay(not automotively inclined and a female with no automotive background!)--but it sounds like you agree with mechanic-will continue to look for others response over the weekend.
