1989 volvo 740 Car wont go in reverse

Default 1989 volvo 740 Car wont go in reverse

Hi,
I am brand new to driving a volvo and brand new to this forum, I am not certain about these little mechanical problems that occurs when volvos cars get old.
About a month ago, my car started lagging after I put it into gear, my car would be in gear and my foot on the gas but it would lag for a few seconds before it would catch into gear.
As of two days ago, everything is working normal, however; now, when i put my car into reverse(it is an automatic) and i press on the gas it just stays stationary, a few people have told me that its the transmission and if I want to fix it then its going to cost more than the car. I was hoping someone could help me out by identifying this problem so I can save some time/money by not going to the mechanic to get it inspected right away. Thank you

Check the transmission fluid. If its low, reverse is the first thing to suffer. If its low then check to see where its leaking. Either a seal or maybe one of the cooling lines might be bad. My experience is that Volvo automatic transmissions are extremely tough and durable... One more thought is I once had one that sat for a few years and the brakes where sticking causing the car to respond as you describe. Also, check the E-break. They are notorious for sticking... Stop on a hill, put the car in neutral and let off the brake. If the car doesn't role then you have brakes sticking... Hope this helps...

If your fluid is not low, then your transmission is bad...

I'm new when it comes to automatics; we just picked one up. Could it also be the starter inhibitor switch at the gear shift?
