Question 1990 240 Wagon Rear door issue

Hi!

I just opened the rear door and it will not stay up when it is open. I need to hold onto it when I close it,
or it will just fall down - with a thud.

This is a new thing.

Anyone have a clue as to why?

Thanks!

the gas lifts are worn and will need replacing
one is not enough to hold it up on its own so it may be that just one failed

you can pop them off and attempt to compress them by hand, it should be extreme firm, if its not its bad.

that or replace both

Thanks.

It does not take a pro to do this either, it seems.

Easy job for the DIY guy, probably available at your neighborhood Autozone, O'Reilly or Advance. Rockauto.com is great if you can wait a few days to get them shipped to you, usually pretty inexpensive.
