Default 1990 740 GLE arrow shaped dash light

Now that I've got it on the road, my 90 740 GLE shows an arrow shaped light on the dashboard sometimes. When it does, it won't shift into high gear. Usually, if I turn the car off or run over some bumpy road, the light goes off and it shifts up. I don't have the owners manual, does anybody know what this light is supposed to indicate?

That's the UPSHIFT light...on the automatic, it indicates you are in 3rd (direct) rather than 4th (overdrive).

There is a manual selector switch on the rear side of the shift lever...but if it is going on by itself, you could have a shorted switch/wiring or a bad overdrive relay.

I would say it is the overdrive relay located in the fuse box behind the ashtray and the little cubby hole.

Thanks, I found the relay. "looks ok" but I'll check the switch on the shifter too before getting a new one.
Tech, as you suggested, I tested the Oxygen Sensor and it didn't read ANY voltage whatsoever. Took the sensor out and going to get a new one.
Up till now it's been getting about 12 miles per gallon. Would a bad O2 sensor cause such bad fuel economy? I'm just curious if anybody else has had a similar problem with such excessive fuel consumption cause by the O2 sensor.

Yes a bad O2 sensor will cause poor gas milage.

note: helpful hints on o/d relay upshift arrow the wire for the up shift arrow runs through the shifter bucket and over the trans tailshaft to an o/d solenoid this is also true on 240's 740's 940's with the aw 70-71-72L trans the wire can rub through the caseing and short against the case of the trans. this can cause premature failure of the relay. (failure is usually between the bucket and the solenoid on the trans under the car) inspect and insulate, plastic wire loom works well, also on eariler models the insulation tended to dry out and flake off. esp. in exposed areas (this is one of them) these are the most likely causes however i have seen some failure of the solenoid and or internal failure of the trans but most of these failures are not intermittent.
