1990 volvo 240 not starting again
hey guys, this is the second time my car has had this problem in the past couple of months. First time i replaced the fuel pump relay and it started up just fine and if it didn't start a little starter fluid would get it going but now even that wont work. when i turn the key the car cranks over but it doesn't start. also when i turn the key, i don't hear the fuel pump running so im wondering if there are any other things it could be than the fuel pump like a fuse or something so i don't have to go and buy a new one. also the car has 195,000 miles on it if that matters

A new relay? I replaced my relay with an aftermarket one for 15 dollars and LASTED ONLY ONE WEEK....ONE.
replaced the relay with an OE one and have not had problems yet....
I would get a used one from a junk yard....
ebay has some OE ones for 18 bucks.
1) crawl under the front of the car...look at the rubber o-ring on your crank pulley...if cracks/missing pieces or simply dried...this might be messing with your timing....JUST TO GET IT OUT OF THE WAY.
2) take out fuse number 5 and number 7 ....(fuel pump fuses, check fuse panel for correct numbers) and get a wire and touch one fuse connection to the other(jump them)...LISTEN FOR THE WHIRRRR OF THE MAIN PUMP.....have a friend open the gas tank cap and stick his/her ear very close to the opening and listen for a faint whirrrr sound...intank pump...(sometimes you don't hear the intank pump)....but still works...but if you don't the pump is faulty.....or you don't have power to it...
3) test fuel pressure...that year has a little bicycle looking test inlet to test from...
4) find a loner fuse by the battery.....see if it is blown...
I lean towards the following:
BAD RELAY (AFTERMARKET)
FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR
FUEL PUMP....main or intank.
Fuse by battery....

actually, to test jump the fuel pumps on a 240, you don't have to remove any fuses... Just take a wire, and connect one end to fuse 1 2 or 3 (always hot), and touch the other end to either side of the fuse marked 'fuel pump' (I think its 5?), this should power your pumps even if the car is off.

hey guys thanks for the advice what happened was i left the keys in the car on the second position the whole time we were testing things and it died. So we charged the battery and i looked at the fuses while we were charging the battery and the last person who owned it put the wrong amp fuses in some of the spots. so i looked at my bentley manual and put everything back where it was supposed to be then i looked at the pump under the car and just moved some wires around a little bit and when the battery was done charging it started right up and i ran it for 15 minutes and it was fine. i also went to listen to both pumps and i could hear both of them. i'll try starting it up in a couple hours to see if it still does

I'm not sure I'd trust bentley for the fuses, as they've made changes over the years, and the bentley books don't track all the year to year specifics.
the sticker inside the fuse cover plate is the best reference, that or the owners manual.. here's a copy of the 1990 USA/Canada 240 owners manual, http://www.volvoclubthailand.com/man...anual_1990.pdf
says, fuses...
