Default 1990 Volvo 240 wagon front dome light reply

New light

Old light

I purchased a new dome light on eBay, it is a different configuration than the original but is supposed to fit my 240. I’ve placed the green wire on the wider connection of the new light and does not work. Is there a trick to this? Thanks.

well, the new light looks to have 3 connections. as seen in your picture, the bottom connection is probably power from Fuse 8 (always powered), thats the green wire. carefull with that wire, as long as fuse 8 is installed and the car battery is connected, that wire is hot, and touching any body metal will blow fuse 8 instantly.

the two connections on top, the one on the left goes to ground locally (like the screw holding the inner fixture on), and the one on the right goes to a blue-black wire that comes off the door switches (and is grounded when any door is open)

hmmm, it appears Sedans and Wagons came with different style lights, your original one is the wagon style, while your replacement looks to be the sedan style.

I believe the correct volvo part number for your wagon is 1312942, which appears to be a discontinued part. I see several used ones on fleabay in various conditions.

FWIW, in 1993, the wagon switched to the sedan style lights.

so they do fit, you just need to a short ground wire jumper, with an ring terminal on one end for the ground screw, and a 'fast-on' spade lug thing on the other.... and I'm sure when you remove that nylon piece thats screwed to the roof, you'll find the other blue-black wire, for lights-on-when-door-open
