1990 Volvo 740 GL Sudden Gear Loss
The saga continues. I took my car to the mechanic today to have him check the new fuel lines and banjo fitting to be sure nothing else blew. Oil, transmission, brake fluid all checked - no problem. As soon as I left the garage, the car would not go out of 2nd gear to 3rd, (automatic). When I press on the gas pedal, the engine revs the way it would if it was in neutral. The transmission fluid was fine. The car hadn't been having any shifting problems. I have an appointment today. I live at that garage now. It may be time to try to find a vehicle for $1500 or less, (I paid that for this car in 2010), but it only has 188,866 miles on it.
It's always been necessary to fix a car that can be fixed, but if the transmission is gone... Any simple component, or something in relation to the repaired fuel lines, that might cause this. Thank you.

about the only thing that effects shifting outside of the transmission itself is the throttle pressure cable to the transmission. if thats pulled all the way out and jammed, the transmission thinks you're flooring the gas pedal, so delays shifting until very high RPMs.
Thank you. I just returned from the garage, and was coming on here to say the problem was fixed. If what you call a cable is that little wire that once cleaned, fixed the problem, then that is exactly what happened. I'm sure you know how relieved I am. Maybe the wire/cable was loosened when it was the fuel line work was rechecked, which is why the component failed yesterday. I doubt that was the case. In case anyone is wondering where I was lucky enough to have this possibility spotted immediately, it was at VIP, by the one mechanic that sees it consistently.
