I just bought a 1991 240 and it has no overdrive. The fuse is good, the relay is good and I am getting voltage to the solenoid. I replaced the solenoid because the rubber on the top of it was all rotted and breaking. With the new solenoid installed I still have no overdrive.....Does anyone have any ideas? I don't think I have ever seen one of these trannys fail... Thanks

 

You have never seen them fail? I have seen many fail--it just depends how many you have dealt with...

 

ok thanks I guess? no I have not seen one fail and this is my 4th 240, good luck I guess, always thought they were pretty bulletproof.

 

they are bullet resistant, but nothing is bullet proof against a large enough caliber

as AT's go, the AW7x is one of the ruggest out there, but they CAN fail. quite possibily, the orifices in the hydraulic circuit that the OD solenoid activates are plugged.

 

Is their a rebuild or fix for that? Would doing the bypass give me OD?

 

if the hydraulics are flugged up, you'd need to drop the pan and clean things out. don't loose the little ***** in there. its possible a thorough flush and change with fresh ATF might unclog things, ATF is actually quite a good cleaner.

correct. the bypass kit is simply a plate that replaces the solenoid that has a slot instead of a valve.


OH, your solenoid could be plugged up. you'd have to remove it, jumper power it with 12V, and see if you can blow through the little hole on the end.

this is what the solenoid looks like.


that one has had a bypass slot cut into it with a dremel tool, this acts just like the bypass kit. I would only do this bypass if the OD electrics were messed up beyond repairability, otherwise I'd want it working properly (I do lots of mountain driving, and occasional trailer towing)

Ya I put a new solenoid in already and verified that there is current going to the solenoid...Do you have any procedure for cleaning out the overdrive system or a diagram that identifies the trans parts when you drop the pan? I cant seem to find much on them. thanks a ton

 

the factory had a greenbook service manual on the AW70 series transmissions.

frankly, its complex enough, that I would bring it to a good experienced tranny shop thats done plenty of 1980s/90s RWD toyotas... as thats what it is. It likely will cost a few $100 if dropping and cleaning the pan and valve stacks is all it needs. if they have to R&R the whole transmission, thats $1500-2000. its often cheaper/easier to get a junkyard AW70/71 from a wrecked 240/740/940 and drop it in. you have LH2.4, so your bell housing has a notch for the crankshaft position sensor (CPS), but that can be cut into an older one. If you find a recent wreck that looks well maintained and cared for, odds are pretty good it has a good transmission.
