Have a 1991 740 with one damaged tail lamp. I need a complete new unit. The 1991 units are impossible to find so I was thinking of replacing both sides with 1990 units. Are they compatible? Thanks.

Sedan. No, they are not the same. Do you mean they are compatible? 1991 is completely different to earlier models. 1991 has 3 rows red across the top and reverse lamp alongside amber in the middle, red at the bottom. 1990 has two rows, amber, red and reverse lamp at the top and all red at the bottom. Maybe they changed in mid year since I saw some 1990's with both designs. Are these two designs interchangeable?

I think the circuit boards are different.

But there seem to be several places selling the 3 row style online... not at junkyard prices but they are available.

There hasn't been a 740 come through my local yard in about 18 months.

 

1984-1989 are the same. 1990-1992 are the same, not interchangeable with the earlier types.
