Hi ! My wife and I bought a 1991 740 wagon and I need to know if there is anything special I should do to change the trans. fluid and filter ?

the 'filter' in an aw70/71 is just a screen, nothing to change.

to change the tranny fluid, warm it up thoroughly, then pull the plug on the bottom of the tranny and drain into a clean graduated container, you'll get about 4 quarts. put the plug back in, and add exactly what came out in fresh Dexron-III ATF (I use Castrol Multi-Import) via the transmission dip stick tube. now, disconnect the transmission cooler line from the radiator, hook it up to a clear hose into a jug that has graduations, and start the engine, let it idle. each quart that comes out, add a fresh quart via the dipstick, repeat this til it comes out clear red, shut the engine off, and button the cooler line back up. test drive the car, check the ATF level and top it off if its low.

you'll probably need 8 quarts ATF to do this. I've used various transmission funnels, the one I like best looks like...


I cut the hose down to about 6" as thats all it takes to reach the 240/740/940 dip stick... the covers/caps keep it clean.
