Default Trans Fluid Change?

I have a S60 2.4T front wheel drive. The Volvo dealer told me that you don't change the trans fluid or filter in a Volvo! Correct?

Like BMW they have 'life time' fill. But on the other hand, if you do not want to purchase a new/rebuilt automatic transmission, then change (power flush) the fluid every two years when you change the brake fluid and antifreeze. It is almost criminal how the manufacturers are selling the 'life time' fluid story!

Should the trans pan be taken off also to replace the trans filter when you are completing this flush?

Nope................no need to change the filter........in fact, I believe some of the Volvo's do not have a filter. TECH could commet on that aspect. At any rate, have your Volvo dealer power flush the system..........don't just 'change' the fluid! If your Volvo doesn't have that type of equipment (God forbid) a G.M. dealer can do the power flush as I believe the trans fluid is the same. Once again, TECH can clear that point for us. Lastly, I change trans fluid, brake fluid, & antifreeze every two years and have never experienced a failure of any of the systems that are attendant to those systems!

Per Volvos Maintinace program, We are only required/suggested to replace Tranny fluid @ 52.5K Only on vehicles used for towing. Other than that we never really touch it, hell I never really check much. If it aint leaking than where would it go? Most of the 2000 and up models dont even have a drain plug. By Volvo we have to take the pan itself off to "drain" it! I dont believe there is a filter either, Ive never heard of one.

The Volvo dealer that I visit power flushes the fluid and never simply drains it. Mazda also recommends the flushing method and not the old drain and fill. Interestingly, Volvo, unlike BMW does not "push" the flushing of the brake system. It is unbelievable the crud that comes from the calipers every two years when I flush the system! Incidently, I use a Mytvac to change fluid and use ATE Super Blue and rotate with "normal" ATE (same boiling point but orange colour) so I can visualize when the fluid is completely changed.

Maybe the 2005 S40.

The 2001 and up S60,V70,S80 all have GM transmissions in them.
They come from the Front wheel drive Caddy's

If they switched to ford then good the transmissions will last longer!!!

Does your heart good knowing that you spent big bucks buying a Volvo/Taurus/ Lumina with an Italian throttle body!

Incorrect.
MOST volvos' and Specifically the S60 DO have a drain plug, no filter.
Drain and refill with Mobil 3309 3 times and you are good to go.

You and this Volvo Tech guy are full of it.
The 2001 and up S 40, 60 and 80's are Aisin Warner Trans. No Ford trans has ever been used. The S80 has used a GM trans in some models.
You guys are really uneducated about the trans requirements.

And the type oil to use. If you don't know for sure don't say it. What if someone believes you two???

The S60's all have Aisin Warner trans'. Same as on Toyota's. Not Ford or GM trans. It's a very good transmission requiring Mobil 3309 JWS 3309 trans oil. Change it every 50K or sooner and it will be no problem.
The Italian throttle body is from Magneti Marelli, and is now warranted until 200K or 10 years if it acts up. The Software update corrected the high hold RPM problem. Clean your TB yourself, takes 10 minutes. The newer S60's have a Siemens TB in it. I think the old ones have a white dot on them, the new ones a yellow dot. Only recalling it, actual truth could be the reverse of what I said on the color.

Where do you get this info? There is not a serviceable trans filter in the 2001 and newer S60's. Drain plug and fill only.

I am going to change the trans fluid in my 2002 S60 2.4T Auto. Is there no dipstick anymore on these? is it a drain and fill bolt under the car? Do I use a small oil pump to get it in? Does it take 8 liter? I bought 4 liter because they are so expensive ($20/L)and figured they had dipstick and I could flush half and get it clean that way but if it is a drain and fill under then I have to get all 8 liter??? Please let me know. Thank you

magnus,
Tech stickied a former post on this regarding the oil and plug and so on.

Yes, a drain plug exists hex head bolt on trans body underneath like an oil change.
You can drain and fill 3 times (12 quarts) and have about 80% good new fluid after this.

Hint, take the Volvo fluid back for a refund of your $80. for 4 quarts.
Find a Mobil distributor (some listed in this forum) and for $46.50 get 12 quarts of Mobil 3309, which is to the JWS 3309 required oil spec. Just rebadged from Mobil to Volvo. Volvo calls it synthetic (only word of mouth, no truth to it written or otherwise) and they are wrong.

Dipstick is yellow and hidden, driver side front of car underneath some hoses. You can find it with a flashlight. Pinch the top of it to release it. it's the check tube and fill tube.

Draining will flow out about 3.5 quarts or so each time. Run it around the block to have the torque converter mix it with fresh fluid each time you drain and fill.
