Default 1991 940 speedometer poblems

Hello to you all

I hope that I can find an answer to my problem here.

I've got a 940 GLE 1991 2.3 114kw and my speedometer isnt working properly.

It started with the speedometer going to zero and not reading kilometers, then sometimes the speedometers gauge/arrow would be jumpy..

Then I noticed that the speedometer does not go over 80 km/h.

I've looked into this problem for a month now and I found a website were they said that the problem was in the leaky capacitors.. Well I took the speedometer to a worskhop where they changed all the capacitors and soldered everything over and cleaned the leakage..

I just came back from a test drive, the speedometer didnt jump around anymore and it didnt fall to 0 km/h, but the second problem remained... It DIDNT go over 80km/h....

Im thinking that maybe I had a faulty speedometer and a faulty sensor aswell.. But I'd like to know that the second error( doesnt go over 80 km/h) is definetly the sensors fault before i start changing it... I had a look at the sensor aswell and it seemed to be in a good condition..

If anyone has any ideas please tell me.. I also heard that the problem might be in the speedometers grounder, is that true? I doubt that thats the reason why it does not go over 80 m/h.

Very common... '91/'92 are the worst!
Most likely the repair was not fully successful. It has happened before--it's a tricky operation after all.

You get a signal so it's not the speed sender in the diff.

I just had two speedos redone and they are fine after the capacitors transplant. It's not 100% but most likely the shop missed something, I'd say.

I wonder what they might have missed?

They replaced all of the capacitors and cleaned it well.. I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow.

And the problem is weird, because why stop at 80 km/h... Every single time at 80 km/h even if I go 150 km/h, it wont jump or move to 150 km/h.

Hard to say. These things seem to work in mysterious ways... How's your circuit board? Silly question. I'd refloat the solder points on the back of the board. Those seem cause a lot of anomalies too. They develop minute cracks over the years...
Hard to say why the speedo goes only up to 80kph.

91/92 7/9 speedos are a particular problem with this exact issue. and you can't just swap them for a newer one as the instrument panel is different. I was told the newer instrument panels require a different gasoline level sender, so if you change the panel, you also need to change the gas level sender, argh.

there's a chip on those Yakuza speedos that fails and its no longer available. mine is stopping at about 45 MPH, which is about 72 km/h.... I too did the re-cap thing, using top quality capacitors, cleaned all the spooge off the board and everything. I didn't reflow solder the whole board yet, but I'm not sure that will do anything

I have a 92 944 and a 92 745 and I had both speedos redone and they are fine now, also refloated the board on one. The Yazaki meters are totally different as used in the 93 and newer, even the attachment screw locations are not the same. I don't know about a chip in the speedo, never heard that...
