1992 240 4cyl wagon: fuel pump relay Ry2 coil issue
New member here, and as with many seeking your expert input!
We have a 1992 240 4cyl wagon, that has been passed around since a family member purchased new. Only 112,000 miles. Recently it started dying, and/or not starting. With the age of all the components, and as a preventative, I replaced both fuel pumps, and their filters. The car continued to misbehave. I resorted to removing the cover of the fuel pump relay, under glove box, and observed that when not starting or dying only the Ry1 relay coil pulls closed. The Ry2 side remains open. On the times both close, the 240 starts and runs fine. I see this same symptom with both new relays, I just can't figure out the cause.
Is there another component with this system that is famous for causing this random behavior?

I should point out, my forum name and email, have Indy in them, not because I'm an independent car tech, but because I live a couple minute walk from the Indy 500 race track :-), just wanted you all to know, I'm having issues with our family Volvo....for real :-)
Crankshaft Position Sensor is what I'd look at...
You replaced the fuel pumps just because? I hope you kept them as spares as surely they were better than what you replaced them with.
Always a good idea to diagnose prior to start throwing parts at a problem hoping it'd go away...

Thx for the input! I totally agree with testing parts before replacement. My challenge has been the fact that the issue is intermittent, and the driver in this case has near zero understanding of cars, meaning if it dies, I'll get a phone call and need to remind them to put it in park, and turn the key again.
As many Volvo forums list fuel pump relays, and even the dual pump system as most frequent issues with the 240 series, I feel good about installing the new Bosch pump and filter. I will get the recommend Stribel relay, and now have better sources for my 240 Volvo parts than Amazon Thank you again!
