1992 240 smoking bad
Ok,My 240 has been smoking and using a ton of gas(only gets about 180 miles to a tank). Its running real rich,i took it to the shop yesterday, the guy checked it out for about 5hrs,A couple of codes came up,he checked the fuel pressure 2 times, checked injectors, checked the Computers, the firing, made sure there was no vacuum leaks. All came out fine!He said it was a shot in the dark, but suggested it might be the coolant sensor(because its telling the injectors the engine is always cold),so it keeps dumping fuel.Does this sound right?or does anyone have any suggesting? Thanks for the help!I forgot to say the mass air flow is new,new plugs, wires, distributor.

Make sure there isn't gas in the vacuum line that goes between the fuel pressure regulator and the throttle body. Both the O2 sensor and temp sensor should be verified for proper voltage and resistance. Make sure there are no holes in the hose that goes between the throttle body and air mass meter .... usually caused by wires rubbing on the side of it.
Hey thanks for the reply bubba240!Yeah he checked the o2 sensors, and the temp sensor, said all had great voltage, and he checked all the vacuum lines.I looked over alot of the basic stuff before i took it to the shop.I didnt find nothing myself. The car is getting way too much gas though, the oil smells just like gas,and its almost pure **** that is blowing out of the tail pipe. The car has good power when driving down the road, but it idles real rough.
The diaphram of the fuel pressure regulator can leak, allowing raw gas into the intake. The o2 sensor voltage (green wire) should swing quickly (back and forth) between .2 and .8 VDC during idle with everything connected. The FI temp sensor should be ~300 ohms to ground at ~room temp.
2-2-1* Fuel trim (lambda control) too lean at part load
Lean; air leak; low fuel pressure; bad AMM
Engine stops when starting from cold; high fuel use.
Any air leaks between the air mass meter and the engine (the amm hose, bad intake manifold gasket, leaking injector seals, vacuum line, etc) will register as lean to the o2 sensor and the fuel ECU will open the injectors longer ... or the o2 sensor is bad.

Bubba, funny you should say that! I replaced my coolant temp sensor, it was definitely playing up, resistance stayed at the cold side of operations.
I know they're a very simple device, but somehow they do fail.
Regards, Andrew.
