Post 1992 940 gl problems

I have owned a 1992 940 gl volvo for two years now, its been a great car until yesterday. I was on my way home and going up a small hill, since i live in TN. So the check engine light came on while i was going up a hill, i got down the hill and pulled over on the side of the road. I was able to get the car to move about 6 feet down the road. i shut the car off then turned it back on, and found that the car would not stay started, it would start then die after a few seconds. Even when i tried to give it some gas it would die on me. I know there is no crack in the engine block, i know its not the alternator, or the fuel pump. any ideas on what it could be. i will give more details when needed. hope to hear back form someone soon. i was considering that it could be a sensor but i am not really sure, plus I had no problems that morning or the that day or the week before. need to know because i travel a lot during the week and need my car..

i would like to keep my volvo but if i do get rid of it i am not sure, that i am going to by another one. if i do its going to be another volvo then its going to be a 850 that 1996 since its newer, with less then 100,000 miles on it.

need help soon as possible please!

heres an update. i was talking to someone today and they told me that they had a simular problem with their truck and it was doing the same thing because water got into the fuel line somehow, but she told me that it did not make any since that the check engine light came on though. just another idea. need help as soon as possible....

this is just another random guess, which would make sense if the check engine light did not come on. but still puzzles me that if that where the case the check engine light would come on. but i am not sure though..
