Yes they are, if it's an automatic. You may have to change out the bell housing. Just replaced one. AW-70 or AW-71 are the model numbers. Both are 5 speed difference is the notch on top back of engine for sensor.

Actually, by 92 I believe the n/a cars got AW70L transmissions...has a lock up torque converter to save a bit of gasoline The AW71 and AW70 are 100% interchangeable. The difference is the AW71 is MUCH stronger and while it is a nice upgrade for n/a cars, it is mandatory for turbo cars. The additional torque from even a mildly modified turbo motor will shred an AW70 in no time. Beginning in 1989 some and by 90 all the transmissions had a notch cut out on the top of the bell housing for the crank sensor. I seen transmissions as old as 1984 that did not have the notch but had the casting designed for it to easily remove the material! You can therefore, use any automatic transmission from a 240, 740 or 940. If you get one from a 240, the tech will need to transfer over the linkages but it is quite simple. Buying used, I always recommend getting an AW71 as they are much stronger. They seldom fail behind an n/a motor. Even behind a hot rodded turbo motor, the AW71 is stronger than either manual transmission Volvo offered.
