Default 1992 Volvo 240 Apparent Engine Seize

Ok so I just threaded about my engine mount. I had to take it to the shop 2 miles up the road without the mount in it today. A few days ago I started the car on accident with the oil filter out and there was a release of oil. I didn't think all the oil released from the car because the pan sits lower than the filter. Well It has sat a few days and when I went to it today I put in the old filter and it started right up. I did this about 2 times and only let it run for a few seconds to see how the engine ran. Well I started onto the shop and about halfway it started stalling and cranking weaker and weaker with the dash lights dimming until it finally shut off right as I got to the shop and it wouldn't start anymore. Well I assumed it was something with the mount not being in and one side of the engine being lower. Maybe with the alternator belts or something. Well awhile after I left the shop they called me saying they tried jumping it and it wouldn't start. They said they checked the oil and nothing was coming up on the dipstick and they believe my engine is seized and that its over for my 240. I just don't believe it's over but I can see the possibility of it being seized. If there was no oil in it, it only ran 5 minutes and wasn't even able to run long enough to reach normal operating temperature. It has always ran phenomenal and I don't believe that a few minutes of driving with no oil which I was unaware of would permanently damage my 240. I could see if I drove with no oil for an extended period of time. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

well, is your engine seized? if it is, then there's your answer. I don't think anyone can assure you that "no, under your circumstances a b230 won't ever seize..."
Hard to say in general, but I'd say, yes, yes it can.

But the conditions weren't severe enough for it to be seriously seized. It ran for about 5 minutes and I feel as if I could easily get it unseized. People unseize engines that sit for years.

I haven't been able to get to it yet today but when I do I will try and see what I can do about unseizing it, if it is seized.

Take a breaker bar and try to spin the crank over manually. If it turns, it's free. If not, it's seized.

Ok so I got the new oil and filter in it as soon as I got to the shop. They told me that they couldn't get any response from the engine and they believed it to be seized. My first thought was neutral safety switch and sure enough I opened the shifter cover and it was undone. I put in the neutral switch and it cranked weak. We tried jumping the battery and it wouldn't start but cranked here and there sometimes stronger than others. We charged the battery for sometimes and it almost cranked. I assumed it to be my battery because I have been having problems with it recently. Took it up to advance and they said it was good and that my voltage readings showed no signs of alternator being bad. The final assumption was my starter was acting up. I just pulled it off at the junkyard a few weeks ago. I got back to the shop after advance and put the battery back in and tried starting her and she started but stalled immediately the first few times. Well I guess the oil had to get worked into the engine and block because eventually she got to running like normal. I knew the shop wasn't 100% on what they were talking about. Even though some of their pride got the best of them. Their scoffing and ridiculing soon turned into shock and embarrassment when I pulled out of the shop and took off blazing!!!

running the engine a few minutes without any oil pressure likely took 20000 or 50000 miles off its life, but since thats on the order of 500000 miles up front, you're probably OK.
