Default 1992 Volvo 240 No brake lights at night.

Hey everyone,

I have been working on my friends 240 non turbo. His tail lights were all screwed up so I decided to hard wire them for him. Everything is connected properly and everything works properly except his brake lights wont work at night. This issue was going on before I hard wired them though. We also noticed his number 12 fuse always blows when we cut the car on. It cant be his AC because its never on when we cut the car on. I found his seat belt light was blown so I unplugged all of that and put a new fuse in and it didn't blow for about a day. We also noticed when we did that the brake lights at night would work but were very very dim. Almost unnoticeable. I see that the shift lock is on that fuse as well. When I was looking at the schematics for the shift lock system I see that a brake light switch is in the system. Could it be possible that this may have something to do with it? Or just the shift lock system in general? It would be appreciated to find someone who has dealt with no brake lights when the lights are on so I can pin point this issue. I also need to figure out this fuse 12 blowing issue.

Thanks.

You might check the bulb out indicator relay(?). Under the drivers side dash you should be able to find a cylindrical relay type of device that has a bunch of wires coming out of it. All the tail lights, turn signals and brake lights go through this and it detects when a bulb is out and lights the bulb indicator in the instrument cluster. I have read here on the forums that when this fails you can get all sort of wierd light behavior. See if you can't get a replacement at a junkyard to see if it solves your problem.
