Default 1992 Volvo 240 Starter Problems Continue!

Hey everyone, so I was on here a few weeks ago about some starter problems. I replaced the starter and she started strong. Well as time went on which has been a few weeks I have noticed the same thing I noticed on the other starter. It would get weaker over time until the starter would no longer start. The starts began to not be consistent. Sometimes it would cut for a second and then continue starting and start. The patterns were always different. Well today I got in the car and the starter turned slowly until the dash lights were no longer and the starter stopped turning. It will click every single time when I try to start it. I also noticed that the longer it sits the more juice it has but it isn't enough to start the car. All connections are super tight so I am unsure about why this is happening. No blown fuses. I checked if the threads coming out of the solenoid were loose but they were tight and there is no way to tighten them without screwing up the threads. Something might possibly be draining power from the starter. It has similar effects as if the connections were loose but they are all tight. The only idea I can think of is that I have a bad engine shake and that could possibly be shaking the starter or solenoid bad. All that constant movement cannot be good on the solenoid at least. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

how many volts is your battery putting out ?

I think you should be checking your charging system (eg, alternator).

Yea that is my next step. I am wondering if I have some loose connections at the alternator since that is what powers my starter. My battery light has been coming on for a while so it might be my alternator. I have never had issues with it before or had to replace it but I am hoping I don't have to. Do you have any idea if the alternator on a 92 740 is compatible? Thanks. Oh also, my battery is new from within a year or two. I will recheck voltage though.

If you are driving around with your battery light on then you have an alternator problem. That battery light is telling you that it isn't charging. Without the alternator charging, you are draining your battery as you drive.

The battery powers the starter, the alternator recharges the battery.

its quite possible your alternator just needs a new brush/regulator assembly, these are about $30, and easily replaced with a screwdriver.

I *think* a 740 alternator is compatible, but I couldn't say for sure without looking up part numbers and cross referencing..
