i am about to shoot myself and the car i am in.... the darn thing won;t start and i have no idea what i am missing... if anyone can help, PLEASE PLEASE DO! and in advance... THANK YOU!!!! aight here's the shizzle... drove it from chicago to colorado... half way through, i started getting mis-fires, by the time i got to CO, it was shaking bad! parked the car, haven;t been able to start it ever since... put all new rotor, plugs, wires, coil, still nothing, turnbs and turns, but won;t start... am i missing something?

 

Do you have fuel?It may either be your fuel pump or your speed sensor.Could also be your fuel pump relay.Have you checked all those things yet?

 

lol... you know.... funny thing about the fuel... i could have sworn that i had atleast a 1/4 of a tank left before it died on me lol. and my fuel guage hasn;t worked in years, also... the plugs keep getting flooded so i can only assume(yes yes, i know about the never assume thingy lol) that i still have atleast enough to start the car... and to the pump... i can hear it loud and clear as the day i got it 2.5 years ago

 

Look at the back of the engine where the trans meets the engine on the top.There is a sensor that goes in there its the engine speed sensor.Check that wire good if there is any cracks in the outer sheilding you should replace it.That will cause the car not to start.

 

if the speed sensor is bad, will the car turn and act as if it wants to start but won't?

 

some times yes.Are you getting strong spark? The speed sensor cuts the spark.Also look on the drivers side on the inside of the fender.Look for a plug going to a little black box mounted on a peice of aluminum that is the power stage that will cause funny things like this too.

 

i am about to go and grab 5gals of fuel just in case i AM out of fuel. here's a funny qwestion.... i went to a volvo shop and the tech. eng. was kind enough to hook me up with two pages of ecu codes, i checked the ecu and i got a 1-2-2 which stands for fault in air intake temp sensor. i still have yet to figure out what that means.

 

Here is 2 more things to look for.One is try to unplug your mass flow sensor and try to start the car if it starts the mass flow is bad.If it runs it is in limp home mode.Also check to make sure your fuel pressure regulator isn't bad.Pull of the hose from the regulator to the intake if there is fuel in there the regulator is bad.Im not to sure about the code i will look tomorrow at work.

 

alright... put 5 gallons of fuel in just in case, turned it, won;t start... checked the plug to the little black box you mention on the inside driver fender, all looks good, pulled the AFM plug, didn;t start, pulled the intake hose off the regulator, dry as a bone, its hard to check the speed sensor, it is in a tight spot, has two bolts on it, the shielding looks kinda if-y BUT, you mentioned that the speed sensor would cut the spark, but in this case, when i pulled a plug on a wire and turned the motor, it was the 4th of july all over again, nice strong spark... and now.. back to sq.1. i just don;t get it. i used to have an '86 740GLE and similar symptoms arose, however, i put a new coil on it and the problems all dissappeared. qwestion... on the 740 i had, to the distributor there was a weird black plastic thingy with wire terminals inside, on this 940 however, i don;t see that anywhere, which may mean that a) this year and model no longer has that attatchment(of sorts) or b) i broke it off when i pulled the distributor off to check the seals on it. what would you say is the likely case?

 

Possible you broke it off.I think on your year it doesn't have it the dist is only to throw spark from the the coil.If the power stage is bad it wont start.You can't see when it is bad.I will check on the code tomorrow and let you know.

 

i really really appreciate all of your help man. you have no idea.... its funny though... i am no mechanic but i was able to swap an n/a engine out of me 1st 300zx and put in a jspec tt engine, and it started and ran like a banshi, and yet this is my second V, and i am helpless lol. well, if all else fails, a tow truck and a V specialist with a "car"-putor hopefully will help. but yes please let me know about the code. i dunno if it is an old code that was stored from who knows when or if it is a new code and the ecu is trying to tell me that i suck, i don;t know what i am doing, and that i need to do something with the air intake temp sensor. thank you once again! peace!

 

well not exactly, but the rubber sheath is cracked from the base of the sensor about 5 inches up, and the plastic/silver shielding inside is also cracked, all wires look ok and so does the pull-cord... i hope this is the last thing i need to replace, i will let you know tomorrow if i get it in, or thursday night, by that time i should have it installed. peace!
