1993 volvo 940...help
Hello & thank you for your insight in advance. a few days ago my volvo would not start for me, it turned over but just wouldnt start like it was starved for fuel, after trying several times to the point that my battery was starting to die it started, so i let it run for a min & put it in gear & i rolled about 5-10ft & it died & would not start again. so i talked to a few of my friends & they all said it sounded like the fuel pump but i had that replaced about 3yrs ago i said & 1 told me he heard of fuel pumps going bad after just a few months so i said screw it ill look around online & see if i can find 1 at a decent price, so im checking around & see some say "Low Pressure In Tank Pump, Externally Mounted High Pressure Pump, Two fuel pumps may be required, one mounted in-tank and one mounted externally" is this just an after market thing or does my car really have 2 fuel pumps & if not would this low pressure pump work fine alone? also in my search i find a fuel pump relay & find myself wondering if that could be the problem.
so anyway yesterday i tried turning on the accessories on my car to see if i could hear the fuel pump kick on & i didnt hear anything so i figured ok its definitely the fuel pump & for sh*ts & giggles i decided to try & start the car & it fired right up running a little rough but i just figured that was because it was cold out & it hasnt ran in a few days. so i revved the engine a couple times a little bit & let it run for awhile to get warmed up & then when to back up & it went just fine but i was hesitant to take it anywhere because i was worried it might die on me & didnt feel like being stuck, so i pulled it into the garage & parked it. aside from my question in the 1st paragraph & the question about the relay what else could be my problem.
also my fuel gauge hasnt worked since i have owned the car (a lil over 3yrs) so i been just using the tripometer but recently my speedo has been acting up, it seems to work fine when i 1st start the car but after driving a few blocks it drops to 0mph & then starts working again after driving a few miles most the time. also can some1 tell me to disable the ABS? its not working properly & sometimes when im coming to a stop at about 5mph it will kick in for a sec or 2 & more or less prevent me from coming to a complete stop & i find myself standing on the brakes & when it finally shuts off i guess for a lack of better words & i come a jarring stop. nearly rear ending a couple people.

940's with 'regina fuel injection' have only a single high pressure pump in the gas tank. 1995 bosch 940 non-turbos also may have this single high pressure pump configuration.
all others, including all turbos and 16 valves, and pre-1995 940 bosch systems, use dual pumps, a low pressure 'primer' pump inside the gas tank (accesible from a plate in the trunk area), and a external main fuel pump under the car (below the rear passenger seat).
before this, I'd check the fuel pump relay. this is in your main fuse panel behind the ashtray at the bottom of the dashboard center console. remove the cigar lighter and its pocket for better access.
the fuel pump(s) only come on for a second when you switch the key to 'run' (II), then they come on again when the engine is cranked over as measured by the pulses from the crank position sensor. when the engine stops turning over, the pump stops about 1 second later.

thanks pierce, how would i know if its the relay, are there any tell tail signs that thats the culprit?
also if its the fuel pump with the 2 different fuel systems (regina & bosch) not just any fuel pump will work am i right? or will any aftermarket pump work that claims it fits in all trims/engines of my 940?

the ultimate test for a relay is when you swap it for a good one, and the problem goes away.
to run, a engine needs compression, spark, and fuel. if its not running one or more of these is out of whack. my usual test is to pull a spark plug after trying to start the car, and see if its damp with fuel, or bone dry. I'll test te spark by holding the plug (with insulated pliers) against a suitable ground, and crakn the car and observe a nice strong spark (or not). these 1989+ bricks, there's a specific failure mode that stops both spark AND fuel delivery, thats the 'crank position sensor' or CPS, and/or its wiring. that provides the timing pulses used for both fuel injection and spark.

would this fuel pump work with my car if i find out that it is the pump thats bad? Volvo PRO PARTS Fuel Pump (In Tank Feed Pump) 3507436 - RM European Auto Parts
& with the relay is that subject to the whole regina bosch thing or can i get any 940 non turbo relay?
also the disabling of the ABS, is there just a fuse i can pull or is it more complicated than that?

I believe thats NOT a regina pump, its the primer pump for the two pump system.
this is the official part
Volvo Fuel Pump Assembly (With Regina) - Genuine Volvo 3507495 | FCP Euro
and this is the aftermarket pump-only part.

the fuel relay is common to all 240/740/940 from about 1985 forward except the 94/95 non-turbos.
I would attempt to repair rather than disable the ABS. is your ABS light on? oh, you said your speedo stopped working? check the wiring to the speed sensor in the rear axle, thats used by BOTH the ABS and speedo, and if its gone south, then you'd have issues with both of them

the sensor is on the upper 3rd of the back plate covering the differential (center 'pumpkin' on hte rear axle). its the only wire back there. the sensor itself rarely fails, but the wire to it can fail for various reasons.
ABS won't stop slipping and sliding on ice, it will just help you brake better in variable traction conditions.
anyways, to totally disable the ABS, I suspect you'd need to unplug the ABS control module, and power regulator thing near it (the first is a flat box with a long connector on one side, the regulator thing looks like a relay that has a fuse on top). I *think* they are under the dash on the driver side, but I'd have to dig around in my 1992 to verify that. you could try unplugging the ABS modulator under the hood, but I suspect this would almost certainly light the ABS failure light.

no the ABS doesnt stop u from slippin & sliding but it does help some..at least in newer cars...lol...plus dont they make a sound when it kicks in?
thank u for your patience with me pierce & for your help, but is 1 of these a regina pump...they looks to be pretty much the same as the link u sent to me. i sure hope its not the sender....& at this point the fuel gauge is the least of my worries my main concern is that the car is as reliable as its been for the last 3yrs which right now im unsure of since it didnt want to start at all 1 day (which it has never done aside from the 1 time the fuel pump did go on it when i 1st got it) then a few days later it starts but dies after i take it around the block & go to park it. like i said the fuel gauge hasnt worked as long as i have owned the car & it hasnt been an issue as far as the car runs, it just a pain in my ***...lol
